Hi Morlock,

Yes, the cutting seen on flash earth is the north-west exit of the tunnel as described by Graham and shown oh that excellent map posted by him, the tunnel adit, is of course backfilled. I was up there a year or so ago to explore the adjacent tramway and took some photos, I will post them when I get home.

Cheers

Very interesting. I had a look at Memory Map, and indeed the location of the adit is the nearest at that altitude to the quarry. Without checking I would have instinctly thought it would have been towards Fron or Mynydd Mawr. The tip there now makes sense as well. I would have thought digging through the hard grit that makes the summit of Moel Tryfan would have been hard work - or does slate underlie the hill? In any case it must have been used for a relatively short amount of time give the relative smallness of the tip below the adit compared to the rest of the tips on the other side of Moel Tryfan.

ill send the grid refs tomorrow.if you follow the tramway from the top cemetery it curvesround under the slate tips.join the track which is faster it follows the slope around with small fields on both sides.as you leave the walls, theres an old cutting overgrown now where the tunnel came out.it has been blocked and the area overgrown and the slope has collapsed on the entrance.there is a low wall there which is visible.carry on along the track through the slate tips to open ground still following the track or old tramway, before you reach the old quarry building remains, take the right turn down into the quarry, after a while you will notice the first hole on your right with a lake, before you reach the large outcrop leading out to the track.descend the scree slope down to the lake,on your left just above the lake the tunnel entrance is there.many fallen blocks blocking the entrance, probably can be moved, but as the quarry is still in use that wont be allowed probably.there is another tunnel from above the firing range on the fron side.carry on through the quarry and as you climb up the track after 2 turns, youl see a rockface on your left with a tunnel entrance about 30ft up.this is the tunnel that starts a bit higher up than the rangemyou cant miss it from the fron side, you can see where they cut away the grownd for the tunnel.you can walk along the deep cutting and you will come to the entrance.there is a railway in the tunnel but it is always wet.after a few yards the tunnel is blocked as people have dumped rubbish down the air vent and blocked it.i went through it in the 70s and ended up at the quarry cliff.there is another adit or tunnel as you walk into the quarry from the fron side.just after walking through entrance to the quarry, the track curves right,on your right you will see an entrance at the same level as the track, lower down there is another tunnel very low down.on your left as you start to desend into the quarry from the fron side, you will see a slate wall up on the left.when you reach the level there is an underfground chamber and higher up a steel cable leading up to a 10 scramble to the winch at the plateau.i hope this will be of help to you.

Gentlemen,

i have finally found the lost files of pictures taken on a trip up to Moel Tryfan. Thus far I have uploaded a couple of photos of the tunnel cutting where it crossed the main quarry line to the tip. I will upload some more later.

Cheers

Gents,

I have uploaded a few pictures of the tramway in the vicinity of the adit.

James, I hope that you had an enjoyable day's exploration yesterday, a spectacular location to mooch around.

cheers

Great pictures guys. I am planning a mooch there when I am next up (whenever that is). Hvae been there before and think they are a too often overlooked group of quarries.
Been injured while at work and are not to blame?

Get over it.
