Was Countrywise, showed a bit of the mine inside and out and the brothers working. Can be viewed online for the next 29 days.

Great part of the world for mining remains - The Forest of Dean boasted coal mines, iron mines and even a gold mine, though that was questionable.

Cannop Drift Mine is about SO 60200 12200
I't not far from the old Cannop Colliery, part of which is now a cycle hire business.

Where there's a mine or a hole in the ground.
That's where I'm heading for that's where I'm bound

Cannop Drift is using an AB12, so to is Monument (also in the FOD). Both mines are working the Yorkley seam. I know that Blaentillery No2 mine at Blaenafon uses an AB15 (and I think that Johnson mine (also in Blaenafon) has also got 1 or 2 AB15 undercutters - though is not producing coal yet). All machines are electric (no blast ones left).

as a second year ncb apprentice in 1977 one of our mechanical tests was to change one of the pawls on the large gear in the haulage end.the ncb classed those machines as ancient then.lots of the older guys hated the old rope hauled under cutters,called them killers
third or fourth year test was the main hydraulic pump in the AB 16 haulage end.
only ever saw one AB 16 down Littleton and that was as a nisbi loader

Loverly engineering though, I've never seen one running but I've seen inside the haulage end box - like a giant watch.
Fantastic that some are still in use - the youngest 15s must be 40-50 yrs old?
My late Uncle Roy demonstrated how to drive one, he reckoned the secret was to sit with the haulage cable in "the nick of your arse". Whiskers must of chafed a little 😉
Mind you he had mangled fingers from trapping them between the idler pully and the rope.

The one at Cannop I think is from the early 50's and is cutting a face which is on a 45 degree pitch.
