It will be interesting to see how it performs on pottery found under water (which will have differing amounts of dissolved salts). Also more recently, some types of pottery (bone china etc) are not 100% clay, so I guess that is excluded or it is compensated for. I expect there is a published paper which goes into more detail somewhere.
