Personal appeal again... ::) yep very selfish!!
Given my mysterious bent towards water power a couple of years ago, which I can only attribute to madness and alcohol... can any one please post a few more pics of the wheel, particularly the crank, its bearings, rod arrangements inc big end but also please some underground shots of the man engine/shaft arrangement showing some overall arrgt and detail.... yeah yeah detail is boring but to saddo's like me that can't get there its very meaningful... honest... very interested in what must be GB's most powerful wheel.. the engineering alone is fantastic.. 😎

There's a book on it - a full engineering study - carried out many years ago now. I've got it at home so can't lay my hands on the title etc. but it's well worth a look if you are into that level of info.

Bulletin No.2 Vol 10 of the PDMHS contains an article on the building of the wheel. (Havn't seen this.)

Ha - found it on Abebooks:
The Lady Isabella Waterwheel of the Great Laxey Mining Company, Isle of Man, 1854-1954: a chapter in the history of early British engineering
Jespersen, Anders

It went to a third edition ca 1970 (which from the description is the one I think I have.)

Somewhere I've got some shots taken in about 1989... if I can find the negs.

Grahami

The map is the territory - especially in chain scale.

Of course there is the book by Andrew Scarfe - The Great Laxey Mine - at £20 is probably one of the best value books you can ever buy . It is a fantastic volume and tells you everything you need to know about Laxey.

If ever you are going to buy a mining book for your library this is one

Just to console you over coming second in the snow photo competion! ahh! I delved into my set of PHMHS's Bulletins and Mining History Journals to find you the details of all Laxey Wheel and mine articles in PDMHS's publications (excluding the Newsletters) which are as follows:-

Vol 8, No.1, pp 43-48
Recollections of a Laxey miner - Bobby Kelly and A.M. Gillings
(n.b. this includes a plan of the mine)

Vol 8, No.6, pp. 373-381

(n.b. shews also survey drawings and mine plan)

Vol 9, No.5, pp. 306-312
The Great Laxey Winding Engine, Great Laxey Mine, Isle of Man - David B. Hollis
(n.b. includes diagrams and photographs)

Vol. 10, No.1, pp. 17-23
Further comments about Great Laxley Winding Engine
- David B. Hollis

Vol. 10, No.2, pp 129-140
The Building of the Laxey Wheel - Andrew Scarffe
(n.b. includes copy of the orignal drawing of the wheel, and photographs.)

Vol. 11, No.2, pp 85-89
Shipping the Great Laxey Ores - Andrew Scarffe
(n.b. includes photographs)
(n.b. includes copy of the original drawing of the wheel, and photographs)

There are complete sets of PDMHS's Bulletins and Mining History Journals both at the Derbyshire Local Studies Library, Bank Road, Matlock and the Derbyshire Record Office, New Street, Matlock available for viewing. Alternatively you could request them through your Ripley branch library perhaps? I can't send them to the list as the Bulletins and Mining History are the copyright of PDMHS, also the articles contained in them are the copyright of the authors. However, if you have difficulty in accessing these articles please PM me and I'll scan and email you to them personally.

Hi Bob Pit

Hopefully this will help. Go to the Laxey Mine home page here: http://www.aditnow.co.uk/mines/Laxey-Mixed-Mine/

From there you can upload photographs to either the User Album or the Archive Album. We typically leave it up to members to decide which album, but as a rule of thumb, archive covers anything either no longer extant or photographs older than 20 years or so.

User Album here: http://www.aditnow.co.uk/album/Laxey-Mixed-Mine-User-Album/

Archive Album here: http://www.aditnow.co.uk/album/Laxey-Mixed-Mine-Archive-Album/

Once you're viewing an album, look towards the top left of the page for the block headed 'Quick Upload Links' in there you will find the links to the tools to upload a photograph, upload a batch of photographs in one go or upload a document. Click any of these and you will be presented with a simple form to fill in order to upload.

Photographs need to be in Jpeg format (most common format from digital cameras and usually the standard for scanning).

Okay. Thanks for the tips. I've uploaded a few but for some reason my captions have disappeared into the ether and the photo numbers have taken their place.

Enjoy

There's no technical reason for that to happen, the image upload process doesn't 'talk' to the Exif data in the image file, so the name ought to be what you typed into the name box. The description displays a little lower down, just above the photo.

You can edit anything you're uploaded to change the image names, just go into the album and you'll see there is an 'edit' link automatically below each of your photographs.

Thanks for uploading them :flowers:
