I collect a few train tickets and had these sent me today and as they are Notts with Colliery interest I decided to keep them being hugely expensive at Β£4 for the pair inc postage!! πŸ˜‰

I just loved the image they conjured up of happy kids and families getting the train from the colliery to Scarborough and Cleethorpes..., bags of sandwiches, sweets and orange squash! πŸ™‚
I never realised that these sorts of trains ran from the mines themselves as late as the 60s & 70s.... I bet there were a few tales to tell on the way home and a few bottles of Manns and Shipo's supped as well!

Maybe there is a way to categorise the size and significance of a mine, by answering the following:

If you had to organise a day at the beach for the workforce would you hire

a) a taxi
b) a bus
c) a train ?

Would a charabanc be caragorised as a time of bus though or just under a general heading of Transport? ::)

Imagine the look of horror on the faces of the residents of Cleethorpes and Scarborough when they arrived at Welbeck and Clipstone for their day out in the countryside. Seems a strange choice if you live on the coast.

Or have I misunderstood the 'out' and 'rtn' routes?

The right side of the ticket is alway outbound so when it was ripped off it was kept by BR (or punched that end) and the left retained by the passenger... bit 'right handist'!!!

The practice of ripping tickets along perforated lines stopped but the design of return tickets stayed the same... πŸ™‚

This is very interesting. I haven't heard of this happening in Northumberland. I wonder if it was just a Notts thing or if there were similar things arranged in other parts of the country.

Not necessarily an ideal method - where I worked most of the 1800 strong workforce and their families could walk to the beach. πŸ˜‰

In fact occasionally we used to come up the pit and go right into the sea to wash our "rags" and ourselves as it was barely 300 yards from shaft to high water mark.

Went to Cleethorpes last week they've got quite a nice narrow gauge track running along the sea front with some great steam locos also good model train shop if your into the like.
