On my Poynton colliery ramble I went to photograph the Norbury Pit Engine House. I feel a bit daft on this one as I passed it for years way over the fields whilst driving home.
"Looks just like an engine house" I used to say to myself, but being unaware of Poynton districts mines I always put off visiting :curse: .

How many other engine houses had external clocks?? I am sure I have seen other references and the odd picture perhaps but would be interested to know if it was particularly rare?

It is a lovely engine house and is well looked after, a great survivor.

Don't know about engine houses but Calenick Smelter (Truro 1711) had (still) one,

The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.

Jack Trounson's "Mining in Cornwall - vol. 1" photo no. 107 shows an engine house at Wheal Agar (90in engine) complete with clock. The photo also features on the front cover of the book.

Sort of related... Are there any pictures around of the United Mines clock tower during it's days of use?

Pictures of buildings at Consols and United are rare at the best of times, let alone with any machinery or a clock in the tower!
