Just had another long walk around local engine houses in Camborne area (Cornwall) yesterday and noticed that the ice and wet and snowy weather has taken its toll on remaining bits of original plaster and mortar. On the inside floors there are piles of crumbled mortar and plaster. The stonework has been renovated with modern mortar and is OK.
I may get my camera out to record images of some of the inside walls, as they seem to be losing their "original" layer of plaster and not sure if many have recorded the inside walls of engine houses on the database.
Anyone noticed this being worse this year with the cold weather?

Quite lucky in my area in that, most of the old engine houses have been saved and re-fitted.

Minera lead mine, and pen-rhos are good examples.

But with everything the weather takes its tole!!

Knocker - Harriet pumping engine house and the Dolcoath engine house (the old electric co. one).
Have a look and see what you think.

Not sure about Harriet, but is the plaster in New East original? Up until 8 years ago there used to be a concrete first floor in that one. I'll grab a look this week.

On another note are you going down to the pre planning meeting for the processing plant tomorrow night?

Harriet- my son decided to tidy some of the plaster/mortar on the floor and put it outside, but it is not as bad as Dolcoath, which I guess is not from mining days (maybe from substation days) , but by capturing these engine houses by photographs as they age might be a useful record for someone in the future. Although they have been made safe, they are not 100% preserved and are still crumbling.
The info evening in the Wesley centre I cant get to as its co-incides with a parents evening, which is a pity. A friend of mine is planning to approach Crofty about a trip underground with a group sometime soon, so might find out more then.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
