There was a dire 1970's or may be early 80's attempt at the first book of 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy. It had the lead actors rendered by an effect that made them look like pen drawings and the minor characters where old fashioned 2 D animation. The idea was that the rest of the trilogy would be financed by the takings of the first movie. Nothing more was heard of the venture though I did see DVD's of it advertised when the 'new' LOTR movie was released. (sorry nothing about mines but dwarodelf may enjoy it)

May I disagree & say that I find that version much more agreeable & atmospheric than the overdone modern version? ::)

The books are still bobbins however...

You may of course disagree with me about the merits of the two versions of LOTR. I assume "bobbins" = good. If so we do agree on that much anyway. 🙂

I saw the animated version many years ago and it made no impression on me at all.

Talking of animated films, "Watership Down", which I still enjoy, has plenty of underground material. The mine dig I work on at weekends is like a rabbit warren, so to my mind at least, it's not stretching things too far to imagine that much of the action is taking place in some kind of nightmarish mine!

As a general rule animated films are not my cup of tea, but the "old fashioned" animation of the above film against painted backdrops is rather effective. (you can keep cheesy Walt Disney)

The first half or so of the series was good. The second half touched upon being silly rubbish. It was entirely CND propaganda really.

It was made by the BBC by some of the best they employed at the time. A real high water mark.

Was it lefty/CND propaganda? Oh yes! 😉
