No, think these sort of things are pretty much written by committees now so they get blanded (word?) out to such a degree that they are never truly awful but conversely also ensuring that they never have any particular character.

Can anyone think of a remake that is better than the original film? I can't.

In my books, the best mining films were "The Molly Maguires" with Sean Connery and "Germinal" with Gerard Depardieu.

Almost mining: "The Wages of Fear", one of the most thrilling films I've ever seen - transporting truckloads of nitroglycerine to blow out an oil well fire is not for the faint-hearted 🙂 BTW: that's another movie where the remake was absolute crap.

Cheers

Presumably because of its accurate portrayal of 19th Century French industrial relations & nuffink whatsoever to do with the lassie in it pushing tubs whilst sans une chemise? 😉

How about the original "How Green was my Valley ?" - a film I can't watch, I'm afraid, as despite old age, cynicism etc. etc. the damn thing makes me cry!

Cheers

On a more recent note there was a film about five years ago - Blood Diamonds - about dodgy goings on around the diamond mining industry. Quite watchable in a lots of running about & explosions sorta way.

Furthermore, the recent remake of Journey to the Centre of the Earth is probably the best portrayal of mine-exploring going. Very reminiscent of an average weekend in Cleveland as it happens... :glare:

Totally agree, a superb film!
I have it on DVD if any of the Thursday nighters want to borrow it.

Remake? Gawd, I didn't realise there had been one.

Another mining related film that's one of my favourites is the very obscure "The Rainbow Boys" (also called "Logan" in some releases) starring Donald Pleasance as a gold prospector.

How Green was my valley is a film (and book) that I always confuse with "The Citadel" by AJ Cronin.

A pretty grim story played out in a Welsh mining village and with anything but happy endings (though I liked the idea of dynamiting the sewage works) 😉

Those are sequels rather than remakes though, aren't they. 😉

I reckon that the Cohen brothers' version of True Grit was a success and stood up well against the original.

It's certainly worth watching though as my copy doesn't have subtitles either I'm not certain whether an english version actually exists however a knowledge of the storyline or certainly the book should get you through...

There was a dire 1970's or may be early 80's attempt at the first book of 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy. It had the lead actors rendered by an effect that made them look like pen drawings and the minor characters where old fashioned 2 D animation. The idea was that the rest of the trilogy would be financed by the takings of the first movie. Nothing more was heard of the venture though I did see DVD's of it advertised when the 'new' LOTR movie was released. (sorry nothing about mines but dwarrowdelf may enjoy it)
