My great grandfather John William APPLEYARD (b and living in Kippax) was a coal miner I suspect at this colliery. He was a coal miner in 1881, 1891 &1901 censuses. He died in W. Yorkshire Lunatic Asylum in March 1911 and verbal family history records that he had sustained severe head injuries in a pit accident (hence his incarceration). This was probably circa 1909 (last child b 1910)- March 1911. How can I find any further details please?

Many thanks for the replies. I have already viewed the excellent website suggested and cannot find him named. I have also approached the asylum record office in an attempt to access any details that they might retain. I am beginning to suspect that he might have been injured in an isolated incident instead of a major incident. Hopefully the asylum records (and his death certificate if I can access it) will provide further clues

CMHRC is an excellent resource, but sadly not all accidents and fatalities are listed.
In Wales,we also have records in the Waterfront Museum in Swansea and the National Library for Wales in Aberystwyth,

Maybe an inquiry to one of the English Mining Museums may un-earth a similar institution in England that keeps records.

There is a place called Iron Mountain,in the West Midlands i believe that keeps records,

If your great grandfather was injured at Ledston Luck colliery I would be surprised if you find any information from the usual online resources.

I think the best advice would be to the West Yorkshire Archive Services in Leeds

http://www.archives.wyjs.org.uk/

http://www.archives.wyjs.org.uk/archives-leeds.asp

Ledston Luck was operated by the Micklefield Coal and Lime Co before being taken over by Henry Briggs, Son and Co Ltd. There are archive holdings for both companies in Leeds:

http://apps.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/records.aspx?cat=205-0878&cid=-1&Gsm=2012-06-18#-1

http://apps.nationalarchives.gov.uk/nra/searches/subjectView.asp?ID=B4975&tabType=ARCHIVE

There appears to a great deal of information held which may give a clue (wages information, accident reports etc) though you may need the archivist help to wade through the information.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
