You are right. I was posted to Salisbury Plain that winter. It was colder.

The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.

Even with the onset of soaraway global warming ::) there have been a few winters recently where I have experienced conditions like that.

After driving over 20 miles it was often a case of leave the car and walk the last mile or two up 1 in 4 twisty roads with ice or up to a foot of snow on them. Then a mile walk up the hill to start work (at 1600ft AOD) only to find that the water supply was frozen up so we had to drill dry (and, worse, melt ice for the kettle). But while you're working you create your own heat so "Nar, it's not that cold" 😉

Oh I don't know. I would take some convincing after sitting in an old WW11 radar with the heating broken and the temp. outside -12 at 6.30 in the morning.

Also it was an army camp and the Met. Office had the only wooden building on the camp under the control of the RAF. The heating went on the blink and, surprise surprise, neither the Army or the RAF would accept resposibility to get it fixed.

I used to work at an old engine shed. When I was new there I came to work in the snow and said "It's cold today" to the lads outside working who smirked and said "no this ain't cold.. you wait".
God knows how.... the bl**dy shed was 4 degrees colder inside and the outside option was much better!! Apparently the shed had the ability to freeze and stay frozen inside whilst it thawed outside..... Coldest place I ever worked here.

Last winter on the loco's in Bulgaria we hit -20.5 in the mountains... Frosty eye lashes and only poss to work outside for 20 mins ago. China was even worse, my friends teeth shattered and cracked on a trip chasing steam.

I always thought it was much warmer in the mine than outside in winter - until the night I left off a survey well inside and left the tripods set up for a quick start next day. No chance. I got in next day and after fighting through a few hundred yards of roof to floor icicles I found them encased in solid blocks of ice - surprising what a "wee dripper" can put down overnight. :blink:

Ah but how cold was it outside ;)

Generally do find on leaving a mine in winter that there's a definite drop in temperature.

I did not realise this was one of my old photos. Yes it was very cold up in that mountain in wintertime. I can remember when my father came home from work in the cold winter days, the first thing he would do would go by the coal fire and warm his feet. Diesel would sometimes freeze when pumped from a 45 gallon drum into the excavator. We don't have winters like that anymore.
I have more old wintery photos with snow bound machinery in the attic. I will put them on soon.
