Hi Susan,

The owner / keyholder is Jonathon Wright at nearby Clearwell Caves. Old Ham is a great mine to explore - let me know how you get on!

Phil

Depending on your experience depicts the route you will be taken through.
Can be booked over the phone with a small deposit. You can walk round the public tour too. Make the effort to see their collection of artefacts

Talking about Old Ham Iron Mine. It would sem that some photos have been put under this mine that should really be under Clearwell. The most obvious being the loco photo, although some others appear to also be there in error.

I think that Clearwell caves is just the name that they use as a public attraction, the true name from its working days being Old ham iron mine. The workings do briefly break into a natural cave though.
This is how i understand the situation, however i might be wrong

Ah I see. Very confusing, especially as Squirrel referred to "Clearwell Caves nearby", also Clearwell has a seperate entry in the database and Old Ham has two!

Thanks for spotting that John. I have binned the clearwell page and added it to the Old ham page. The mine was worked very recently so it may have been worked under the guise of Clearwell. The second entry is for old ham pit, which shows some 500 ish metres away.
this is always going to be a problem when people add things to the data base, places can be called something slightly different, or a name altered over the years and it can create a right confusing issue.

Thanks Barney. I am glad it mentions Clearwell in the tiltle so it is still searchable. Names are a pain sometimes. I discovered an irony elsewhere a few days ago. I keep meaning to drop Simon a note about it. Dinorwic is only listed as Dinorwig and as such anyone searching for Dinorwic will have no luck. I reckon the title should have both so both are then searchable. I only found it (or rather didn't!) when I was trying to get to one of the albums.

The 'fuzzy' search will find similar names, but accuracy is always good!
I spend quite a bit of time digging through the database and amending where apropriate, however its a never ending process with the amount that gets added. Maybe a thread for folks to point out irregularities and mistakes?

Stangely enough, even though Simon (thank you Simon) has now altered the tiltle, it still didn't appear, although Port Dinorwic did!

Yeah i noticed that too. I would suggest ticking the fuzzy search box, it seems the best way!

Back to Susan's original post. Make sure you wear a boiler suit because no matter what colour it was when you start it (and most of you) will be bright orange when you come out. I once made the mistake of filling up with petrol after exploring Old Ham. I imagine the attendant thought I was an alian (or the guy from the Tango commercials for any wrinkly like me old enough to remember them). Enjoy the trip.

That's 'cos I hadn't uploaded the tweaked search routine that searches in name and alternative name (mostly because I was about to upload it and then Vanoord and Mrs Vanoord banged on the door to drag me off to the pub...). I've uploaded it now and so searches are all performed in both name and alternative name hence you'll find Dinorwic as either Dinorwic or Dinorwig. Maen Offeren as Maen Offeren and Maenofferen etc. etc.

Well spotted John, I hadn't realised it was searching only in name.
