Whilst up in the area for the weekend dig, I was taken out to a place called Langley, near Hexam, by some land agent pals of mine who know I'm into mines (and are helping to negotiate some general rules of access to mines on their estates.. watch this space..) . For £600k, you can buy two magnificent chimneys, Cornish engine houses, and all the old buildings belonging to a mine, which variously seems to have worked for either coal or witherite, depending on who you speak to. The lot seems to be Grade 2 listed, but these two engine houses are staggeringly good, and it would be a tragedy to lose them to domestic development.. It was almost dark when we got there, so no photos yet. Does anyone know more about them I wonder????

Yeh I know about them, SpartyLea will be very familiar with the place too.
Been stood empty for a year or two but a lovely property non the less.
There was a coal drift there I believe.
There are also some fairly spectacular lead smelt mill flues in the area too

We've been here before..... I steal them when no one is looking, dismantle them (carefully numbering each stone), then re-erect them in Sherwood forest at place called MineHalla....
open on Saturdays only £39.75 entry, but to AN members Free!

PS My mantle piece is really interesting (well to me), its surrounded by 100 odd steam locomotive plates from LMS and GWR main line locomotives... My new addition being a Highland railway plate 😮

The site at Stublick is an ancient colliery and the buildings in question would appear to have been a sort of centralised pumping site whilst the coal round about was worked via shafts and gins. Forget the Cornish bit - the pumping engine here was possibly Newcomen with a cylindrical boiler alongside. The smaller building with its own chimney is described on the OS map as a sawmill. Site at NY 833604. It was a shaft mine - see Durham MM site for a couple of shaft sections.
Now if you want to see a real Cornish engine house try Stonecroft at NY 854689, built of brick. And don't be misled by Shildon, near Blanchland, that building housed a Boulton & Watt engine.

Yes, I'll have it - what is it?

There's a Cornish-type engine house at Cononley, near Skipton, N. Yorks.

You'll have to get a few more ICLOK (Caledonian perhaps). Anything to preserve Scots pride amongst southern pansy railways.

I have worksplates from the Highland, GSWR, Caledonian,... not forgetting Andrew Barclay, North British Loco, Dubs, Sharp stewart, neilson Reid and even William Beardmore... and LMS plates from them all.... The flag of Scotland is duly carried even if I am a Derbyshire guy...
Don't do the Southern at all really.... too much 3rd rail (Hornby land)...... least the big Bullieds to the South West carried the SR flag!

I know off Topic :offtopic:

Anyone noticed how that Stublick chimney is bent? Its really obvious if you stand inside and look up, it goes off at an angle.
The remains of the flue are well worth a look too.

ICLOCK... I'm looking out of my office window at the Union of South Africa thundering by, through my fields.... The engine drivers stop and pick me up when I have time, and I pull levers and generally have fun on the run into town, were there's apub on the station platform - coupla beers, then back pulling levers till they drop me home again... I know nothing about steam engines - just get them all day every day and drive them when I can - I'm on the SVR line just south of Bridgnorth..  :smartass:

I've some pics of the Langley engine houses somewhere, I'll see if I can find them.
I must admit, I assumed the engines were connected with the very large Langley smelt mill site - to drives stamps etc?
I must also admit, they are rather good & I always have a look, when I've got my kicks on the A686.
The nearby Smeatons chimmney is also worth a look.
We inhabit an island made of coal, surrounded by a sea full of fish. How can we go wrong.......

I have a few old photographs taken around 1985-7 of what I think is the area in question, but I am not sure , can anyone recognise these?
