I was wondering if an new 'something' could be added to encompass all types of surface features, for me namely around Nenthead, but I am sure it would apply to other areas as well. There are powder houses, leats, dams, but these don't fit into any cat now. What do you think, could something be done or is it opening a can of worms again.

It would be nice to be able to add say a, place name and then just select Surface Features with no mineral assignment.

I suspect poor Simon has got enough on his plate at the moment. I'm sure that the three things you have listed could be tied in with a site. Powder houses are normally individual to a mine, leats and dams provide water for mills and suchlike.

I agree with you there. Could one not just compile A PDF doc. containg these feature, and others, if applicable with GRs if available and upload it as 'features to be found here'. For example I know the shaft names and GRs of the shafts of the mines around Carnkie and could upload it as 'shafts of the mine'.
The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.

If its something directly linked to a mine the doc can go on the relevant page for that mine/quarry/MSF. Otherwise if its a general area and not specific, the doc can be loaded into the document library.

I suppose you could do it this way.

Yes, I think that is probably the neatest solution. If every shaft, adit, leat, dam and tree was to have its own section it would make things very difficult to find.

If its that important that individual features within a mine are worth noting then just write it into the description or upload photos or a pdf with notes included like the GR. A mine is what it is.... the features therein are part of it so it belongs in the description.... or post something like carnkie suggested... 🙂

I think I agree with Merddinemrys and ICLOCK here. There is a danger we offer too many classifications and end up with a database that is hard to search and hard to locate items. Especially from the point of view of a new user.

If a feature (leat, shaft etc) is inextricably linked to only one mine and doesn't justify it's own listing then a neat way to catalogue it is with a dedicated album in that mine.

Mr Mike, the mineral selection is optional on most location types, it's only required on mine, quarry and colliery, on all others you can select 'not applicable' and nothing will show. For example it shows as 'Ffestiniog Railway' rather than 'Ffestioniog Not Applicable Railway' 😉 or 'Ffestiniog Slate Railway'.

There is a user role of 'album editor' that lets you create albums in mines/locations and I'd be happy to grant this role to a few people who specifically want to do that.

I guess it comes down to each location;

- some will warrant their own unique entry classified as mine, quarry, shaft, trial, railway, port, mill, factory etc

- some will warrant that and if surface may be configured as a major surface feature and linked to the mines it served

- others might be best catalogued with a dedicated album in the mine the feature or remain belonged to

Plus I'm getting scared of logging in these days in fear of finding what new features are on the to-do list
my orders are to sit here and watch the world go by

I only suggested a general additional 'Surface Features' cat, not labels for 'all' possibilities. With places like Nent there are so many things which serviced all the mines in the valley and so technically speaking they where not linked to one mine, grouping them together would have been a neat solution (at least to my thinking) this was my train of thought.

Comments taken on board from everyone about this.

Simon, I can imagine what your wish list is like, as I was involved as a debugger in a big software project, did not mean to hassle you with more!
