Having taken thousands of school children through the George & Charlotte Mine at Morwellham over the last 15 years I am quite often appalled at the lack of knowledge on the part of both the children and teachers. It amazes me how many kids from Cornish schools who have never heard of Trevithick. The vast majority of kids from the Camborne - 'druth area can't name South Crofty.

What knowledge of mining these kids do have tends to be coal related which I assume is a symptom of an homogenus national curiculum.

considering there is a statue of Trevithick outside the library, that doesn't say much.. or don't schools have library afternoons any more?

Having said, I did a stint at Tavistock College (science supply) and had the pleasure of doing the Rocks Module. Some of the kids were into mineral collecting, one bought in some original mine plans and the local knowledge was pretty outstanding. A few knew the use and outline of how arsenic was calcined. Really impressive stuff. That place will probably kick out some geologists.

I imagine they had been to Morwellham :thumbup:

The small help that it is, I am teaching my son (4) about mining and what all the parts of the old workings are called.
He already knows a few terms.
I just hope all the cuts do not mean Educational trips to places like Geevor, East Pool and Wheal Martyn are cut back.

Is it safe to come out of the bunker yet?

Well when I was still in school in the late 90's/early 00's the school would make parents pay for trips like that, so I should think they will still be carrying on with them. They don't really bother with mining trips much though, I only got to do them because I was studying social and economic history in my last years there.
