I am looking to photograph a dramatic open cast mine/ quarry, lots of earth works etc., I need to be able to have access that I can photograph the vista, so if it is half way up a mountain I will not be able to get back far enough to shoot. I have seen Parys Mountain on the site and this is something of the feel, I have also visited a Slate quarry in Snowdonia, but as I remember you could not get back far enough to be able to encapsulate it.
Please could someone give me some pointers or contacts.

Regards

We dont have anything on that scale.

One of the Cornish china clay pits might be about as impressive looking as he will find here.

The Glensanda superquarry (opposite side of Loch Linnhe to Port Appin) is one of the largest in Europe and is pretty huge but they're restoring it as they work so it might not look as impressive as it ought too... I've never been there so I'm just guessing on that.

The Cornish china clay pits are very dramatic, but I dont know if you can completely overlook any of them without an aeroplane.

Parys might be suitable, surface access is no problem at all, however it might not have the feel you're after as the surface areas are long, long abandonned.

The two biggest slate quarries up here, Dinorwic (ceased working 1968) and Penrhyn (working) would both have the problem as you say that you can't get far enough back to take the whole area in. You could photograph Dinorwic from the opposite hillside though.

Oakeley might be suitable, but again that's being worked (untopped, it was an underground quarry) so an approach would need to be made.
my orders are to sit here and watch the world go by
