Loath it, or really loath it, some mines have access conditions...

Was wondering whether it would be worth compiling a list of mines where access conditions apply, those conditions, and who to contact to arrange access.

Over to you 🙂

Can we start with Cwmystwyth, Apparently access is being argued at the moment. Anybody have any solid info?

If you want to visit the mines on the area of land managed by the Heritage center at Nenthead you are supposed to check in at the Heritage center (or their office in the courtyard behind during the winter) and tell them where you're off to.
Unless you are a member of the North Pennines Heritage Trust they will charge you £1 for access to the site.
The main mines concerned are
Smallcleugh
Rampgill
Caplecleugh Low and High Levels
Hodgsons Low Level
Middlecleugh
The mines (with the exception I believe of Middlecleugh to which NPHT have the key) are gated but not locked.

If however you're an early riser and like a long trip you're unlikely to see any signs of life in the heritage center or their office cos there's nobody around until about 10am.

There are 10 types of people in the world.

Out of bounds. Solidly grilled, no gates. Welsh Mines Presevation Society are in delicate negotiations. Please keep away until some sort of access is sorted.

Ystrad Einion. Gated, but not padlocked. Please keep gate closed.

Will the next visitor please take a shovel and clear the weeds in the entrance. I got my feet wet on my last visit. 😞

With regards to Cwmystwyth, the crown estates have fenced shafts and levels. The entrance to (Bonsall's) Level Fawr has been grilled, but someone has 'modified' it. I was there recently, I didn't go to other levels (Rosa, Jackilas, Alderson's, Taylor's etc) to see how the access is, but it's not far from me, I can easily go back.
I know someone in Ceredigion County Council who has been involved in the access question, I'll try to contact him.

In addition to the above, I'm not trying to ignore Rhychydwr1's urgings. I was only on the surface. Most of the mine area is access land so you can still walk around.

Thanks for the link.
I came across this link the other day.
I'm not too sure how well known it is, but it gives a few surveys and maps of some mines (and caves)

this link is to knotlow / hillock, but they are others if you navigate
I went in a mine once.... it was dark and scary..... full of weirdos

When do I get my soapbox, I need to rant on about some b***cks

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
