Yeah. I've been dipping on and off eBay to see what sort of money they seem to go for these days and have tried to match the going rates.

TBH, if I made them all absolute bargains they'd be gone quick but I'm not in desperate need for the space or money so no point giving them away.

I can get the FFR Down to 9mpg loaded with camping gear and Sankey trailer on...

The mrs' tdi powered 2A 88" turns back late 30's to the gallon even with permanent 4 wheel drive.

well the real 1 tons had a very low ratio gearbox so it had lots of low-down grunt. They were thirsty if you did a lot of open-road miles.

I don't remember Maybel being particularly thirsty, probably compared to a 950cc diesel fiesta it would be. But series 3's are not really daily commuter vehicles.

Personally, if I was to keep Maybel (and it's not impossible that I won't) I would repower her with a 300tdi. The original 2.25 petrol runs but is tired. Could be taken out and given lots of love but I wouldn't go to the trouble. A nice ex-disco diesel engine can be had for 300-400 quid, which will return pretty good fuel economy and reliability. They are pretty easy to install in a series.

I've got a late 2a with a 200TDI in. You need to get the gear ratio up a bit, either with a diff swap or overdrive. The splines on Bearmach units are a lot more substantial than Fairey units. I've had one of those strip the splines resulting in no drive.Pulled the whole gearbox out before I realized what had happened. Good job I was wanting to swap that anyway.

I've already got range rover diffs and overdrive (it had a 19j boat anchor fitted when I bought it)
However the original box and overdrive will be coming out and permanant 4x4 lt77 or r380 stubby going in in fullness of time.

The first engine swap I did was in a 2a in 1979 during the steel strike. There weren't many alternatives then - mainly 4-203 Perkins or BMC diesel. I sourced a BMC 3.4 litre from a Leyland Terrier truck, rebuilt it and fitted it. Got diffs from Rover V8 saloons to get the speed acceptable, along with Bearmach overdrive.
I've still got a Nuffield tractor that I use that has the same engine.

And today's word of LandRover advice for the discerning 300TDi owner is: double check the tightness of the oil cooler pipe work unions on the oil filter housing after you have refitted it because it's really obvious in the snow if it's leaking, and grovelling under a vehicle which has just been out in 30cm deep snow is really, really unpleasant!

Yes, you did get a good choice of albeit overlapping ratios. Reminds me of a chap I worked with a few years back. Ran a Lotus Europa - Renault engined. He worked out that a Renault TX engine would go straight in, but didn't think about the fact that the Renault was front wheel drive, and the Lotus mid - engined rear wheel drive. Put it in first and shot backwards - four reverses and one forward ! Had to flip the crown wheel over.

I can remember one particularly cold day I left the 2A running at fast idle on the hand throttle with all 3 boxes in neutral, most amusing as a mate from further up the street tried to move it out of sight for a bit if devilment.;D:offtopic:

That's what I have in my Series 3 109. apart from the lift pump playing up yesterday they are pretty unburstable. But they're not to everyone's taste. 😎
