I've always kept a couple of decent builders helmets for this sort of use.

Before anybody flames me, I wouldn't ever recommend anything without a chin strap for regular use or where srt is involved.

But for £3.99 a builder's helmet will protect their head. And you can usually add a chin strap as an add-on.

To be fair Simon I'm inclined to agree ....

IF things went titsy underground (Rock fall from above OR a slip over an edge ) ....even the best of "Helmets" are likely to be of little use .

The helmets that most of us wear whilst exploring are in reality little more than bump protection ...

And at that a builders hat would be more than adequate ...ideally with a chin strap BUT far from essential .

Just my opinion though .

Completely, utterly & entirely essential I'd reckon.

Never seen the roof fall on anyones head but have seen people slip or trip over suffering injuries needing hospitalisation. Your helmet flies off as you fall and you crack your head on a slate edge then you're right royally screwed.

To be fair if you fall over with a builders helmet on and hit your head hard enough to be causing damage ...
Chances are the chin strap aint going to make much difference ....
I spend most of my working day wearing one and going through the various RAMS rigmarole in the modern construction industry and they have yet to make chin straps mandatory in most situations .
Those that do usually specify a petzl type helmet not a plaggy mortar luggers hat .

Likely they would be mandatory if most construction took place on damp slate angled at 45°! :)

And a builders helmet is far far better than nothing. Doesn't take a huge force at all to put a gash in your head or anywhere else for that matter with sharp slate or evidently, nice blunt northern limestone.

Chinstraps are not issued in the mining industry.

Agree, but i noticed some of the Mines Rescue boys at the Gleision wore chin straps.

Mines rescue is a different matter as you'll need the chin strap when using a BA-set.

& mining is a different matter to mine-exploring too. At the risk of teaching grandma how to suck eggs! 🙂

I would definitely recommend a chinstrap if contemplating any movement in fast flowing water, whether above or below ground.

🅱A helmet saved me when I didn't do as I was told as a young apprentice. Just got off the belt at the top of the M/G, all legal, they had exemptions, but the section of trunk belt to the manrider was forbidden for riding, had notices posted. The lecko I was working with said "gerron" I said "No, it says not supposed to"
I started walking down the road, all pretty low and walked into a broken lagging board, it sat me unceremoniously on my arse, just my pride got hurt!!
I jumped on the belt and did as instructed after that.

That old Huwood helmet served me well.

Another memory - digging in very damp conditions i.e. 5'-6" of water at Nenthead and my helmet got so soggy that I was able to reshape it to fit my head.

These stories are starting to sound like Uncle Albert.

"During the war, bitter winter of '41 it was, crossing the Baltic on a tramp steamer, it was so bleedin' cold the flame froze on me lighter!" etc etc
Yma O Hyd....

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
