First of all sorry for sounding so thick!!
I am, at the moment trying to trace my family tree.
My fathers side of the family all seem to come from the forest of dean and bristol however i have just traced my great grandmother who i located as living in BOX BUSH in tisbury in 1881, I have googled this address and ended up registered on this website! I know my fathers family had links with mining but as he is now dead i'm afraid thats as far as i know, can anyone please tell me any history?
it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for you help!

Hello Adele,

Welcome to Aditnow.
Do you have the names of any of the mines associated with your family? We have a comprehensive list of mines in the FOD and many other areas. As for the history of any individual though that would be unlikely unless a specif list of employees was lucky enough to exist against the mines he worked at.

Hi,
Boxbush is in the database here http://www.aditnow.co.uk/mines/Boxbush-Pit-Iron-Mine/  but unfortunately there's very little info on it except that it is located just outside of Coleford (Forest of Dean). I'll have to see if I can come up with more information.
In the meantime try this http://79.170.40.163/forestofdeanhistory.org.uk/NEWLHSopening.htm  site to see if it leads anywhere.

Two Box bushes in FOD, doubt its the first.

Box Bush Iron Pit at SO574108 was a shaft close to centre of Coleford. This flooded and was an expensive failure cica 1809.

Box Bush Trial slope at SO 571104 Trial drift driven 1891, driven 80 yards with a heading of 300 yards long, only produced 100T ore.

There was a Waterloo Colliery near Lydbrook at SO609151 opened 1850 closed 1959 so that goes with your enquirey.
In 1949 it was flooded by breaching East slade Pit trapping 5 men. Colliery most productive in early 1900s due to adjacent draining of Cannop Colliery. suffered several spontaneous combustion fire prior to closure.

Hope this Helps

There is indeed a Box Bush Mine, near Coleford, but its a long way from Tidsbury in Wiltshire. Near Tidsbury there are stone quarries rather than mines. There are also a couple of cottages known as Box Bush. I would imagine the name came literally from the shrub. (are you looking for a Gray or a Green if so they are definately Wiltshire)
The past actually happened but history is only what someone wrote down
