With the imminent end of the British coal industry in 2015, it was felt that there should be a record for posterity of the underground transport systems which were so important to the efficient operation of a colliery. Thoresby Colliery in Nottinghamshire became the exemplar.
Thoresby was opened in 1928 and from 1947 had used an increasing fleet of diesel locomotives alongside various types of rope-worked haulage. From the 1970’s these began to be replaced by four different types of battery-electric locomotives for man-riding trains and the handling of materials and emergencies, using a wide range of vehicles. Rope haulage was also retained for special tasks. The colliery gave its full support, including a visit underground for photographs.
Although from a family long involved with railway engineering, the author, Colin Mountford, obtained qualifications in history and economic history at the University of Durham before following a career in secondary and higher education.
For many years, working with the National Coal Board, he has researched the history of the coal industry and its railways in the North East, much of which he has published across fifty years in books, articles and papers. He is a Member of NEIMME and lives in Northumberland.
