A new event has been added to the Events page.
Event name: THE GREAT TRIALDate & time: 26/05/2012 at 11:30Details: To celebrate the publication of Tim Gates's book 'The Great Trial': A Swaledale Lead Mining Dispute in the Court of Exchequer, 1705-1708, (Boydell & Brewer) the editor Tim Gates will give a short lecture then a tour of the site of the dispute. The publication is a fully annotated edition of the records of a legal battle fought out in the court of exchequer between Thomas Lord Wharton and Reginald Marriott Esq. over the lead mines on Grinton Moor in Swaledale. In its day it was a cause celebre due to the high political office occupied by Lord Wharton and because of the vast sums of money that were at stake. Large numbers of local people were drawn in as witnesses on both sides and their testimonies give fascinating insight into the life of the area. The book follows the course of the action step by step and contains full transcriptions of all the substantive documents of the case most of which appear for the first time. The earliest known map of swaledale was drawn up for this case, copies of which are available in the Museum and at NYCRO.
The book and event will be of interest to anyone interested in the history of lead mining, local history and family history.
