A bit of a treat for those in Cornwall and West Devon. I am giving a presentation entitled 'Mines, Maps and Models' at the Tremough University Campus, Penryn, Cornwall on Thursday 2nd February at 7.00pm in the Chapel Theatre.

There will be some images of Cornish Mines, along with various maps and a selection of 3d computer animations of a selection of Cornish Mines. If you have seen my model of Cwmorthin, then you know what to expect.

All are most welcome.

That's weirdy beardies night!

I imagine many will be interested in both including myself. I wonder if it would be prudent to pass the information on to Roy/Mark.

They have been told, but I will remind them at the AGM Thursday.

When I did mention it at the last meeting all said they would go to the presentation first before decanting to the pub afterwards.

Well, that was a thoroughly enjoyable and educational evening. It's not often you see something so revolutionary as "our man" has created.

The simulated flight over the West Cornwall mining area of 3d "plans" was absolutely fantastic.

I am very keen on seeing it again.

Was indeed an excellent presentation, the flyover of all the workings at the end was something else

For us northern souls not so lucky as to be in Cornwall right now, is there anything you can upload for us to see Keith, as this sounds rather interesting :flowers:
The management thanks you for your co operation.

I have uploaded the first short animation onto the aditnow channel of youtube. Its called OldMillcloseMine. I thought I would upload this first as its in Derbyshire so some of you luckily might know about it first hand.

Hopefully I will be uploading others in the next day or so.

All the best and enjoy. Any printable comments would be useful.

Splendid bit of work.

I'd dearly love to see a similar 3d model of Devon Great Consols

Funny that Barry Gamble has asked me to do same. Haven't had time yet, but will upload the model of Wheal Jane as it is.

Did start trying to put DGC into SURVEX but didn't get very far & realised that it really needed sort of gismo to take each leg off the plan rather than manually getting data & inputting data for each leg or station, which was the only way I could do it.
As Tamarmole knows I am gradually working on digitally redrawing the DGC plans (rather than just photos), Would this help in producing a 3d representation?

I can turn any survey into 3d given the following x,y,z for each point. This could be done on local coordinates or OS.

I'm always interested to do other mines ....

I'm redrawing the plans in Coreldraw. Hoping there may be some way to then extract the data other than manually extracting and reentering the data for each point which would be extremely time consuming. Once you have the data it would presumably be available for anyone with internet access to download survex & make their own basic 3d representation. Of course the normal data input for survex is length/bearing/inclination for each leg & I don't know how easy it is to enter data as xyz.

I'm sure Ali that with a little work I could get survex to dump the x,y,z coords for each survey station. It would be worth trying with a small section of survey, Perhaps next week I'll download survex and have a go.

Another possibility is can you use autocad? The coreldraw files can be saved as dxf files, although intitially they will by in just two dimensions but presumably it would be then easy enough to give each level a z as long as they are seperate sets of data and the depth can be identified (which is not always possible on many old plans). I can produce dxf files but can't open them as I don't have autocad.
It may also be possible that ways of doing this have already been done in the caving world. In Matienzo with over 300km of surveyed passage now the survex data has been imported into 3d digital surface mapping in autocad, & I think footleg has been working on 3d presentations, but I havn't really got into what he has done, more interested in pushing the caves for real.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
