Saturday 15th or Sunday 16th?

Possibly the Sunday might be better for me, work-wise.

Might be handy to see if the water level could be dropped slightly in the adits, although there's enough down at Fron Boeth to keep us amused for a while.

Any decision on date? 16th?

Works for me 🙂

To be honest, I doubt that drainage will help: if there is a connection, it should be draining quite low from Pant Mawr; otherwise it'll come out of the bottom of Moelwyn itself.

The vein at Moelwyn seems to be quite vertical and there may be an issue with the connection (if there is one) being on the wrong side of a deep hole!

I'm tempted to suggest that the more interesting route may be into the top of Pant Mawr and then down to one of the lower adits - I doubt there's a connection to Fron Boeth, but there have to be some way into the upper levels of Fron Boeth which can be seen from the lower level.

Incidentally, I don't suppose anyone has a survey for Pant Mawr / Fron Boeth lying around?

I did have a plan of Fron Boeth and pant mawr including the tunnel. It was given to me by the late Griff Jones that wrote the book on Rhiwbach and Cwt y Bugail etc.
I have had a look, but cannot find it.
Fron Boeth is basicaly 3 to 4 levels with most of the chambers at the lower level where the boiler is. You can see down from the upper levels down to the bottom. Very interesting artifacts there. The mill area is well worth a look around.
Pant mawr has not a lot to offer and is not connected to moelwyn as far as I can tell.
It might be possible to get a copy of the plan from 'Plas tanybwlch' as Griff was very involved with the place.

I have found the plan , and here it is. It is too big to fit in our scanner so had to use the camera. I have put the photo on P.U.
I would come with you on this trip but I have the Tal y llyn railway on the Sat 15th and Anglesey Henblas on the Sun 16th with the old car.

Either 15th or 16th for me but 16th prefered, might want the 15th to try and lower the water level.

The plan doesn't seem to open up larger 😞

Click on the plan and you'll get the larger one then you can supersize that. Or this http://www.aditnow.co.uk/supersize/Personal-Album-106-Image-50781/  will take you directly there...

The plan shows "Entered 1980" - that sounds about right for the Plas IA Course. I didn't attend that year, so can't throw any further light myself.

Yes working now, thanks Vanoord.

If I'm going to have a look at the water level, which adits would be best to concentrate on, I've devised a syphon that may or may not work.

Um.

Level 15 looks most interesting *if* it connects down to Level 16 and thence to 17 & 18 - that would make for an interesting trip downwards!

Failing that, probably either Level 9 or 10, both seem to have chambering.

Presumably Levels 3 through to 7 are blocked at the adit, although it may be interesting in the future to see if that's a situation that could be changed...

Any idea if they are the "official" level numbers? I always understood Moelwyn, PM & Fron B were numbered downwards in one sequence.

So on the plan the missing 13th & 7b levels would be Moelwyn?

I would imagine that the numbering system was for the survey?

The "missing" 13 would - I suspect - be superstition?

As for the 7b, that one is a bit of an oddity tbh.

Level 1 or 4 on the plan can be seen on the left of this photo. So there is a possibility that there were originally a connected to The Moelwyn mine.
The Moelwyn mine which is just to the right of the photo also continues behind the camera to the very old workings which have some adits and a chamber worked to the open.

If i remember corectly the workings behind the camera at its most southerly point is cloddfa Sion Llwyd. The barracs are on the south face of Moelwyn Bach, about 200yds below a trial level. known to us sheep chasers as [bricsol].

Very interesting to know that. It seems a very old part of the workings as the slate is material has deteriorated quite a lot after being exposed to the elements for so long. Nice fire place there too.
