Possibly have a look at Fron Boeth / Pant Mawr on Sunday 9th May?

It's the next weekend day that I have off that's actually free! :(

Failing that, Saturday 15th or Sunday 16th, I've not yet done the rota for work, so both are currently free.

[tweak]I've changed the thread title slightly[/tweak]

Moelwyn and Pant Mawr - apparently - are connected, but there's also a theory that this is believed simply because they share a numbering system.

It *might* be possible to find a connection, but I'd be very tempted to do it from the Pant Mawr side - Moelwyn is very old and rather unstable.

The new gazetteer is nowhere near as useful as the preceding edition 😉

While on the subject of Fron Boeth. I was talking recently to one of the people involved in the digging (about 5 years ago) at the Fron Boeth tunnel. He says that they did a survey of the tunnel and are sure there are 2 collapses quite near to one another. One each side so to speak and for a long way too. The three people are from porthmadog area and one is a member of AN.
If anyone wants to know anything about the tunnel, just send 'haroldm' a pm. I am sure he would be more than happy to share some information that he has on the tunnel.

I was planning on having a quick look at the track/tramway sometime over the bank holiday, might poke my head in Moelwyn but not too far as I'll be passing, might go right round the mountain but not sure yet but like the our Disclaimer: it all depends on the weather.

Would be interested in having a look for a Pant Mawr-Moelwyn connection on the 15 or 16th. Would drainage be a hint as to where/if there is a connection?
Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it.

To be honest, I doubt that drainage will help: if there is a connection, it should be draining quite low from Pant Mawr; otherwise it'll come out of the bottom of Moelwyn itself.

The vein at Moelwyn seems to be quite vertical and there may be an issue with the connection (if there is one) being on the wrong side of a deep hole!

I'm tempted to suggest that the more interesting route may be into the top of Pant Mawr and then down to one of the lower adits - I doubt there's a connection to Fron Boeth, but there have to be some way into the upper levels of Fron Boeth which can be seen from the lower level.

Incidentally, I don't suppose anyone has a survey for Pant Mawr / Fron Boeth lying around?

I think you'd be best concentrating on rigging Pant Mawr to Fron Boeth. I really can't see a through trip being possible between Moelwyn and Pant Mawr. All of the adits I've been into at Moelwyn have gone into one or two chambers - the mine would have to be a lot larger if it were to go anywhere near PM. The only adit I have not been into at Moelwyn is the bottom adit - there is only about a foot of airspace left above the water. The tip outside this adit isn't really large enough to suggest a long tunnel through Craigysgafn. You might be able to drop down to this level underground from one of the levels just above or below the Rhosydd Pack Horse Trail.

Whilst you're up there you might like to have a look at some of the workings on Moelwyn Bach itself. I'm not sure if these are part of Moelwyn Slate Quarry itself or were a seperate entity - AJR doesn't seem to mention them. From the top of the Bwlch a path runs south on a retaining wall. If you follow this to the end you come to a small open pit working with an adit, half bricked up. If you go into this adit, you can then descend down a series of chambers and emerge a couple of floors down. The chamber goes down further, possibly down to lake level. Davel found this and broke a couple of ribs trying to move some rocks near the entrance to get us in iirc.

If you're going to go to Pant Mawr and Fron Boeth, choose a sunny day and prepare to get very wet. The top adit at PM is over waist deep and is wet for a very long way! All of the other adits range from knee to waist deep.

If I get up there I might have a look at it, a while since I was on the tramway but most of the water was held back by the build up of vegetation at the entrance of the adits from what i can remember (I didn't go in any), if this was dug away it might help.

Saturday 15th or Sunday 16th?

Possibly the Sunday might be better for me, work-wise.

Might be handy to see if the water level could be dropped slightly in the adits, although there's enough down at Fron Boeth to keep us amused for a while.

Mr Turbo

Any success? I hope to get up there over this weekend to see if I can do anything, folding shovel sharpened and ready for action.
