Morning All

Having never done any of the Nenthead area stuff and knowing very little about it, I wondered if anyone (a) could point me in the direction of the right people to ask about trips/directions or (b) fancied a couple of trips on the weekend 12th/13th September? Becky and I are in the Lakes the week before sniffing around Coniston*... ...I have heard amazing things about Nenthead but not sure where to start really...

Cheers!

Hat

*anyone with any good advice on the Coniston Copper Mines other than "buy the field guide"?? 😉

You can buy surveys in the visitors centre (which you have to visit anyway to sign in), which although are a tad pricy are very good. Mr Mike has something to do with them I believe.

Then, just make sure you know where the entrances to Rampgill and Smallcleugh are, and have a bimble around.

Try not to get lost in Smallcleugh! It's not like Box, but I could well imagine me getting lost if I went exploring the flats.

Take kneepads.

Have a quick look at this

http://npht.com/wordpress/2009/07/21/13-09-2009-beyond-the-ballroom-dancing-in-the-shadows/

The North Pennines Heritage Trust that look after the Nenthead site are running this trip, lead by one of the Trust directors who has been expoling underground for at Nenthead for over 40 years (sorry Pete!). It would be a good and informative introduction

If you want to know about Nenthead and trips etc, I would have a look at Mr Mikes website http://www.mineexplorer.org.uk/

He has a lot of very detailed trip reports covering most of the Nenthead area; much more useful than a survey in many cases.

Thanks y'all for the replies - can anyone recommend where to stay in the area?? Clearly Google and the like bring up lots of options but suggestions from real people tend to be better I find!!!

The bunkhouse at the mines themselves is cheap if thats a factor.
http://npht.com/nentheadmines/activities/bunkhouse/index.htm

Great in winter when you're the only ones there but likely full of cyclists doing the coast-to-coast this time of year.

Can 2nd the bunkhouse. Not 'romantic' though.

Also consider Cherry Trees, the B&B up the road. The landlady is very used to mine explorer types as some clubs stay there.
Price is reasonable.

However, she's a bit intense for my tastes, and the ritz it aint.......

And if you want a bit more luxury then you can try the Miners Arms, very useful if you are fond of the drink, roll out roll in:

And if you want real upmarket, but I doubt they will be open to mud covered types, try Nent Hall:

SO who does know it and fancies doing it on Saturday the 12th then?? 😉

Well, I do know the way and would be very much up for doing it again, but unfortunately I think I may have other underground engagements that weekend.

You could easily do bits of it with no prior knowlege. Capplecluegh to Smallcleugh is a great trip and doesn't involve taking any SRT gear.
It does get a bit wet though...

You could then extend that to Rampgill quite easily if you have gear to pull through a couple of short pitches (I think a 30m rope is sufficient, but you'd be best checking that)

If I'm free, I'll let you know, as the full round trip would be a good introduction to the area for you
