A new event has been added to the Events page.

Event name: Mining Information Web Portal Launch

Details: Mining Information
Web Portal Launch, 21st May 2008, The Law Society, London
Mining has occurred in Great Britain for about 5000 years and a diverse range of minerals have been extracted over that time. Plans, sections and shaft information exist for many of these mines yet only coal mine plans have previously been indexed as one co-ordinated and accessible collection. The aim of the Mining Information Group has been to change this situation and to unlock the valuable information trapped in disparate mine records. The information is not only valuable from a planning and ground stability point of view but is vital for Health and Safety.
The British Geological Survey, the Coal Authority, the National Archives, the Health and Safety Executive, the Valuation Office and the Camborne School of Mines have worked together as a public sector partnership to put together a web portal of all types of mine plans. The initial phase of the project has created an index of as many non-coal mine plans as possible, and the group continues to work towards making scanned plans available via the web as their next target. The portal gives information on name of mine, location, commodities worked, date of abandonment and instructions on how to access the plans.
This event will launch the Mining Access Portal with presentations from directors of the Coal Authority and British Geological Survey and provide the opportunity to network with those in planning, mining and the construction industry.
We would like to take this opportunity to invite you, or members of your organisation, to take part in this important launch event. It will take place on the 21st May 2008 and will be held at the Law Society, Chancery Lane, London and run from approximately 10.00am until 1.00pm. Lunch will be provided.
If you or a colleague can attend, please contact Naomi Idoine by email ([email protected]) or by telephone (0115 9363100 ext 3169). An information pack, including an agenda and location map, will be sent to you one week prior to the meeting.

Looks as if this is the portal page: http://www.bgs.ac.uk/nocomico/

The database search is quite interesting, but it has very little for Caernarfonshire, with just Rhiwbach of the 'big' Blaenau mines listed. It refers to two sets of plans, but neither are available online at the moment.

Looking at some of the other sample surveys, this may become a very useful resource, but at the moment, it only scratches the surface. Without wishing to blow the AN Trumpet, the database on here is massively more useful!

Hmmm... further to that last post, if you search by "Slate" you find a lot more - at a guess I should have been looking for 'Merionethshire' 😞

There are a few more entries, but it suggests that Wrysgan, Votty and 'Oakley' were all abandoned in May 1905 - which is a bit odd, as Oakeley was officially abandoned in August 1970!

In virtually all cases for the Blaenau mines, it suggests that I pop down to the Dolgellau Records Office to look at the plans - which is mostly where one would expect them to be...

There's certainly potential in it, but I agree it's a bit patchy at the moment - for example, there are a lot of Derbyshire lead mine plans in the Sheffield archives (Hubbadale mine is a case in point) but the site doesn't mention that. It also doesn't give actual locations, which can be a real drawback with older mine plans - if you don't know where the shafts and adits are/were, the plan is meaningless....
Putting this aside, I look forward to seeing it develop and I hope they do go on to scan the BGS's metalliferous mine plans.

I looked at quite a few of the slate mines listed. With a couple of exceptions they all seemed to have closed April or May 1905!

Also, in particular, I looked at Votty & Bowydd. It just says no scans recorded and go to Dolgellau. However, when I was there a month or two ago, there was mention that all the Votty & Bowydd plans had been scanned and were available from the Coal Authority!

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
