Provisionally at the end of November
Work weekend to re-timber Cwmorthin adit.
Work this weekend will be physically very heavy and will have an element of risk.
The job that needs doing is to replace and supplement the broken timbers supporting the outer end of the adit roof. this needs doing before winter sets in if we can achieve it.
Certain individuals and equipment will need to be confirmed as definate to ensure it goes ahead at the end of November.
The primary aim is to secure the long term safety of the adit before winter weather has a detrimental effect, also before weather makes moving heavy loads up to Lake Level difficult.
Please watch this 1st post for date confirmation.
Volunteers please step forward bearing in mind the nature of the work there is likely to be the odd arse nipping moment during the weekend

dependent on getting a lift from down south but will do my best 😞

p.s if anyone needs welding or fabricating dun for this let me know but would have to get someone to pick up my tools from cornwall if there needed :angel:

I remember you saying you had acquired a hydraulic ram, was this correct and if so can we use it on that weekend??

Absolutely.
I will bring it along. It has various extension pieces and I believe that it generates about 10 tonnes of pressure. Its the same equipment as used by the Fire Service for opening up crashed vehicles to get the occupants out.
Its about 30 years old but still servicable and in good condition.

We now have 20plus people attending.
Those who are travelling for the event please bear in mind that accomadation is in short supply (it is likely that with the rate of vandalism in the hut it may not be sleepable) and it may be necessary to rough it in the mine itself.

20 people can NOT work in the adit itself at once and it may be necessary for some people to move on to other projects within the mine, we have several possiblities in mind (all equally physically demanding)

What sort of other jobs have you in mind Jagman?

How about some cleaning up of all the painted arrows?

my orders are to sit here and watch the world go by

This was something that was brought up by me recently. And agree they need cleaning up.

There will be a new information board going in on that weekend also.

Other jobs include. clearing up the BVI, and re boarding the managers hut

And replacing them with some of those nice little illuminated signs pointing towards the exit... ;)

I'd certainly concur with removing any of the arrows that don't actually point towards the adit, although I wonder if there's an argument for leaving / installing some signs which do point towards the adit to ward against people getting lost. That's going to put the cat amongst the pigeons...

Any arrows that are of use and serve as a safety device need to be left. The arrows concerned about are the ones that don't make any sense.

I'd agree with clearing up the BVI - I assume you mean getting rid of the galvanised water drum etc.: presumably the crashed truck should remain wedged as it is, seeing as it's one of the classic sights 🙂

Yup, the idea is not to sanitise or restore, just move the clock back a little regarding the rubbish and damage in there.

Nah! The pram is one of the highlights. Over the years it has moved around and been seperated from its wheels! I wish I'd charted its movements now!
