Hi Juli

There's a couple very cheap books specifically about the Eston mines available either from Moorebooks or Guisborough bookshop if you're local. The Catalogue of Cleveland Ironstone Mines probably also gives some grid references though my copy's long lost so I can't check.

All the main libraries in Cleveland tend to have copies.

Edit: There's an old Cleveland County Council report on abandoned mine workings which contains pull out versions of the abandonment plans for the whole district. Stockton Central Library had a copy a couple years ago and presumably still do and copies turn on internet book sellers sites every now and then.

According to the mining plans portal (http://www.bgs.ac.uk/nocomico/choose_search.htm ) there is a copy at Teeside Archives and a scanned image at the Coal Authority

I went in a mine once.... it was dark and scary..... full of weirdos

When do I get my soapbox, I need to rant on about some b***cks

Hi Juli

I've got a copy of "catalogue of Cleveland Ironstone Mines" and it gives the following:

Eston NZ 563183

Main seam 14' 6"
Pecten Seam 2' 10"

Old bank Drifts NZ 563183
New Bank Drifts NZ 566186
Trustee Drifts NZ 560180

Hope that helps

Where there's a mine or a hole in the ground.
That's where I'm heading for that's where I'm bound
So follow me down Cousin Jack

I seem to recall that the late Richard Pepper produced a booklet on Eston Mines.

The Tom Leonard Mining Museum at Skinningrove might also be a good source of info

Yes, his notes upon the Eston Mines are being quite extensively transcribed in current editions of the Cleveland Industrial Heritage magazine as well.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
