As a couple of people have noticed, some mines in the database are tagged to the wrong region of the UK.

This has come about because the Landranger sheets sometimes span two 'areas', like mines on the SJ sheet could be North Wales or could be North West (or at a push Midlands).

Anyhow, it seems to be teh NY sheet that hase caused most problems. Could some kind soul tell me which of the mines on this sheet...

The Nenthead Mines (Brownley, Smallcleugh Rampgill etc) are all in Cumbria, doesn't that count as North West?

Be better if you had a new Region North Pennines or Alston Block or somesuch so all the metal mines stayed together and save North East for coal mines and quarries... if its not too much work

I shall defer to other people (youself and Nimrod particularly) better knowledge here, but I've written a handy little script to let me easily move a mine between regions, and then move the albums, and all the photos in the album (all are tagged to a forum to allow the click here to discuss link to work).

I quite like the idea of creating more specific and less arbitrary (like NE / NW etc) regions, but would need some help with this where my knowledge lacks - like anywhere outside of N Wales!

I'd be glad to help with the Northern regions if you wanted to make the areas reflect the different orefields and the durham/northumberland coalfield instead of just Northeast/Northwest which is a bit open to interpretation when you get to the Pennines since there are alot of mines pretty much in the middle

Yes, i agree Brownley Hill is in Cumbria but it IS in the wilderness.. ie on the other side of the pennines 😉
I based my categorisation on the pennine divide rather than a purely county location which I thought would be a bit misleading for the Nenthead mines. I have always personally considered those more NE than NW. Anyway... Sparty_lea.. I have given you a load of your mines back :lol:

but I think stuff like Renwick, Hilton, and Silverband which are your side of the hill belong with the other Pennine mines and the Northeast coalfield is better separate.

Been having a bit of a think about this; I like sparty_lea's idea of more detailed and logical geographic regions; the NE / NW etc are very broad and not desperately helpful.

How's this for an approach:

- keep the current forum structure for the broad areas of the UK (north west, north east, midlands etc - this was arrived at after some debate and deciding not to fragment it too much and thereby offering a huge and confusing list of forums)

- keep the current three methods of listing mines (by mineral type, by landranger sheet and by broad region), as well as the searching functionality

- introduce a new method of listing mines, for example by 'major mining region', this would allow better geographic grouping, and allow splitting of those geographic regions. For example I could split N Wales slate into Blaenau, Coris and Bethesda etc., and other regions could be grouped/split as required. This would only require minor modification to the database and one new value stored against each mine.

The reason I don't want to modify the forum to match that, and would rather keep the basic NE / NW categories for the forum, is that we could easily end up with hundreds of regions and that would be terribly confusing from the point of view of a huge list of forums. If somebody has a question to post about a mine in the north east it still seems logical to me that they post it in the NE forum and give the topic a title that identifies the region and mine.

I also rather like the idea of regional editors with the power to move mines around and create/assign these new geographic regions.

The only problem there is whilst we've got good coverage from the NE, NW, Midlands and North Wales, but at the moment very little from the SE or SW.

That could be one of these new 'mining region' classifications, to help pin down mine locations for those that know how they're searching, whilst keeping the mineral type/landranger sheet/broader uk region for more basic searches.

That sounds like it would work Simon.
The broad regions are fine for the forum but if you're searching for information on the mines of a particular area it makes sense to have them grouped by geological area rather than 'political' districts.

For the north of England I would suggest
The Northeast Coalfield
The North Pennines (maybe split into Alston block and Askrigg block when more mines are added)
Vale of Eden
Lake District/Caldbeck Fells (again maybe split if needed)
West Cumbria

Yes, the mapmakers have included them in Cumbria, but as a Cumbrian I said they are North East because thay are on the eastern side of the Pennine mountain range.
