Hi,
I am intrigued by what appears to be a capped shaft at the end of California Drive in Horbury, at the bottom of the playnig fields. The Coal Authority notice on it says Manor. The colliery was up near the Batley Road in Wakefield. Was this an old air shaft?

In it's own fenced compound? Unusually, the Coal Authority Interactive Map doesn't show any shafts there. Nor do any old maps show any sign of a shaft, or indeed anything.

There are underground workings shown that just reach it, but the CA online stuff doesn't give any details as to which colliery.

I think there may be people on the forum who worked in the area who might be able to help.

Thanks Rikj,
Yes in it's own compound with the usual breather pipe. I have a photograph and will try and attach it, if I can find out how!

Possibly was an air shaft, but the main Shafts for Manor were capped and filled, and can be seen as large humps in Fernleigh court just off Cross rd.

Or try the novel idea of actually asking the Coal Authority what it is, and surprisingly they will tell you. Just don't go smoking near it
I went in a mine once.... it was dark and scary..... full of weirdos

When do I get my soapbox, I need to rant on about some b***cks

Hello Mate, just had a look on Google earth and found it at the far end of the field straight opposite the Gated entrance, as you said it has Manor on it, it is fair to assume it is an old pumping shaft or air shaft from Manor , I am going to look it up in Eddie Downes's book, to see if there is a mention of it.

ACCORDING TO THE COAL AUTHORITY, IT IS A MONITORING BOREHOLE CHECKED EVERY TWO MONTHS BY THEM AND SEVERN TRENT WATER TO CHECK GAS AND WATER LEVELS. THEY DID NOT ELABORATE ON WHICH WORKINGS (IF ANY) AND WHAT FOR .

After contacting the Coal Authority, they told me that there are two boreholes, one to the Manor Colliery Haigh moor seam (9's Panel) , ,and the other to the Horbury Rock (Sandstone). There is gas present in the workings and this is still being vented and monitored. As for the other borehole they indicate that water levels are not being monitored as yet as this level has not YET! flooded, so it is obvious that they expect it to flood eventually. Although this should have no effect on the surface. Hope this helps.
