Some slides taken during a CSM trip to Sheffield I think Easter 1979.

This was one of the opencast iron ore mines just north east of Scunthorpe and adjacent to the steelworks there.

It took some while to determine the location - and during the research a film came to light showing the same location in 1948 - steam face shovels and railway wagons in the pit bottom.

The walking dragline is a Ransomes and Rapier W600 - 795 tons, built in 1957 and left derelict after the pit closed in 1981.

The group also visited the steelworks itself including watching the furnaces being tapped and the rolling mills. Other trips that week included going underground at Linby Colliery, North Notts, a visit to an ICI explosives factory in Derbyshire and a tour of the cement plant at Hope.

All mining stopped soon after that time. That was when British Steel decided not to mine anything and just import. Allenheads,
White Heaps, etc, etc. all closed at the same time.
All the draglines were cut up or dismantled. There is one remaining face shovel in a very derelict state sat in the quarry. Part of the quarry has been landfilled and part remains as a pond/water source.
