Boulby Potash Mine in Redcar and Cleveland, I was reminded today, has a third headgear inside the building over the Tailings Shaft.

There is a steel headgear inside a building at Dalton Pumping Station in Co. Durham. A mile or two north is North Dalton P. S. which has an external steel tandem headgear.

Pete, the brick-enlosed shaft was behind (NE?) and connected to the windowed building, which has been referred to as a pumphouse. The sheave wheels were visible above the shaft enclosure and when I last saw it there were a pair of spare sheaves mounted at ground level with ropes running from them to the headgear.

I am assuming that the Daltons were built for water supply? If so, I am not including them.

What is the function of the headgear? Was it constructed in order to drive the tailings tunnel?

Both the pumping stations at Dalton and North Dalton were built for domestic water supply from wells about 400 feet deep hence the need for headgears.

The Tailings Shaft at Boulby is about 450 feet deep and takes waste water from the processing plant down to a tunnel to release it into the North Sea. A temporary headgear was used in shaft sinking and the present headgear is used for man-riding in the shaft. It's hidden inside a building to make it visually acceptable in the National Park.

Just an observation
The two at Snailbeach are reconstructions on there original shafts. They used mostly original ironwork which survived with new timber.
Georges shaft headgear is faithful to what was there at the last days of working including it's cage.
Black Tom for reasons only known to the county architect is rather squat! >:(
