Thanks - good to see there are still some left at least.

If you're including underground ones, then Parc mine (llanwrst, North Wales) technically has an in-situ underground headframe, though there isn't a huge amount of it left though.

http://www.aditnow.co.uk/documents/Personal-Album-1334/UK-Headframes-Version-09-03-2016.pdf

I assume you're sticking to vertical shafts rather than inclined shafts. There are quite a few complete (or almost complete) incline shafts left.

Welsh additions:

Kidwelly Industrial Museum - 1 - coal - preserved, not on original site. [note: moved from Morlais Colliery, Carmarthenshire]

Dolaucothi Gold Mine - 1 - lead - preserved, not on original site. [note: moved from Olwyn Goch Shaft, Milwr Tunnel Lead& Zinc Mine, Clwyd]

National Coal Museum, Big Pit - 1 - coal - not listed? in use.

Bersham Colliery Mining Museum - 1 - coal - listed grade II*.

City Shaft, Minera Lead Mine - 1 - lead/zinc - full size reconstruction of original wooden headgear.

Cefn Coed Colliery - 2 - coal - listed, grade II*. [note: not part of the adjacent Cefn Coed Colliery Museum]

Ffynnongroyw - 1 - coal - preserved, not on original site. [note: upper portion only; from Point of Ayr Colliery no.2 shaft]

And, as noted above: Parc - 1 - lead/zinc - underground, wooden. [I'd say there was sufficient remaining to count]

EDIT: Apologies - I see that in Part 1 you only want in-situ examples at working and closed mines, so some of the above, having being moved, won't meet that criteria (even if re-erected above shafts?). Or do you intend a part 2 list to include re-erected and replica headgears?

I can't see Tower on the Wales list, think it was still there a few months back?

Thanks for the reminder!

Tower Colliery - 1 - coal - listed grade II.

You still need to delete the functions of the Winsford shafts under shaft name. The shafts are only numbered just like Calcutta Colliery.

I believe Clipstone is still a listed building, in spite of the efforts of some local councillors to get rid of it?

Latest version list is here. Thanks for all your information and comments. Part 2 was on a following page and includes replicas.

Perhaps we should add Part 3 - inclined shafts?

and also Burtree Pasture - second-hand from Kibblesworth Colliery.

If we could but get into Stots, No.4 UG shaft is believed to have a winder in place; Lenny might know for sure (ask Mark H tonight)

There is a very rudimentary head frame in situ on Dyers Shaft at Ding Dong Mine in the Tamar Valley. This was erected in the 70s as part of a diamond drilling program.

Is St Hilda, Westoe's upcast, South Shields still standing? It was just a few years ago - Henry Robson Way opposite the B & Q store.

Corrr, that's rather ramshackle!

How deep is that?

There's 2 inclined shaft headframes at Gwynfynydd, 1 steel from the 1980's and 1 wooden one from late 1800 when my great grandfather was head carpenter there

I think it's around the 300' mark, though Darkmole or another of the Derbyshire old hands will know for definite. It dates back to working for spar in the 1960s-70s by a small partnership, hence the ramshackle nature.

Overton mine with the headgear only went down 180FT 200ft deep but Overton hall mine went a lot deeper.
See Dave Webbs DVD Overton Mine.
On the subject of mine headgear is one more in Derbyshire the Glory mine which we Ian Robb ,Andy Porter Steve Gould and myself moved to the Wakebridge site of the Crich tramway when it was going to be lost to the enlarging Quarry.
Its now part of the PDMHS lead mining display.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
