Been doing some research into my family history and an 1869 census lists my family members residence as Moulds Level, Arkengarthdale N.R. Yorkshire. Does this mean they lived near the mine in this area? Possibly, could they have been miners here at the time?

It is probable that they lived in the hinterland between Moulds Level and Langthwaite village

If you have a look at the following OS 6" to 1 mile sheet [Survey 1854 - Published 1857] held by the National Library of Scotland:

http://maps.nls.uk/view/102344275

Moulds Level can be found to the immediate west of Langthwaite [bottom right of NW quadrant of the map]

There are a number of properties in the vicinity of the mine (you may be able be a process of elimation locate the approximate of the property)

It might be useful to post their names, as there is quite a lot of published information on the mining communities in Swaledale and Arkengarthdale which someone may have to hand

Thanks for posting the link to the map, very interesting. I'm intrigued that the Census specifically cites Moulds Level as the place of residence; the nearest village, Langthwaite is less than a mile away, and there are several farmsteads in the vicinity; the uplands had a greater population than today, so the census has really pinpointed a locality.

Moulds mine shop is shown on the map where you'd expect, adjacent to the level (where the tram lines converge), although nothing remains today, but the level itself. The mine shop is shown as significant structure, so your ancestor(s) may have resided there, at least temporarily.

The only other buildings in the immediate vicinity appear to be crushing mills, so would unlikely be dwelling-places.

As with so many other mining districts, there was both indigenous and itinerant populations. Surnames can often give us a further clue to their origins.
