An interesting photo from the BGS (British Geological Society) GeoScenic archive. Shows where adits were driven into the dolerite as the quarry walls became too unstable to keep quarrying down.

According to the Environment Agency landfill maps the quarry has been entirely infilled now. Interestingly the 1:10000 OS map shows a disused shaft at the northern end of the quarries. The landfill maps are of too large a scale to tell whether the shaft would fall within the landfill.

Anyone ever had a look?

Yeah, Chris and I had a stamp round there after a trip to Cliff Rigg. Probably last year I think.
Only the quickest of looks as it was getting dark and didn't find anything of note though that's not to say there isn't anything there. Certainly shouldn't be any underground access of any particular size.

Certainly looks nothing like that now.

There's some more pictures in Richard Pepper's Ayton book which I think you have?

As Rich said we had a quick look but didnt spot much. We'll have to go back now I think we all have a copy of the Richard Pepper book, but I don't expect to find much.

I believe it was used by the council as a landfill in the 80's (sure Mr Chapman will correct me if thats wrong)

Three landfill sites marked there, two historic and one active. The Environment site has the details. Glad they only managed to fill a bit of Sil Howe. It's a very impressive walk along the full length of it.

If I'm passing in daylight will have a walk up to Langbaurgh.

The Richard Pepper book - bah humbug - Pepper & Stewart. (Being the Stewart part of the duo you understand my point 🙂 )

As I recall infilling had finished by end of the 80s.
