It may be of interest on this forum that my son and I recently constructed a 3D model and animation of one of the cranes in Box quarry’s northern region using Blender graphics software. We undertook this partly for a Bath Stone exhibition in Corsham and partly as a personal challenge. You can either go to a webpage we set up http://deltarectangle.com/artefacts.html or direct to my son’s youtube channel:

Also on the webpage is a link to an OpenGL 3D model that we were able to generate from Blender. This should work in any browser (it may take a little while to load) and allows you to zoom and rotate the viewpoint of a slightly simplified model.

(The odd pixelation glitch on the video is an artefact of youtube's rendering and is not on our original.)

That's really rather splendid.

Absolutely A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. 3D graphic packages just get better and better...

Thanks for sharing.

Thinks... A tripod crane lifting rough slate blocks onto a 'sled' in one of our N Wales slate mines would be a good follow on project. 😉

Yes, I love it. The background's great as well. Big blocks of stone and some dark voids.

Very nice indeed, we need more things like this as learning tools to show how things from the past worked. Would be nice to see bean engines, balance bobs, pump rods, steam engines and the one I would love to see is the Cornish man rider engine as there is very little out there apart from drawings and a few photo's.

Great work though and thanks for sharing.

Yes, Daggers, especially the Wheal Grace bob and winding gear on the Beeb's Poldark series. If they'd cared to have looked on here, Wikipedia or other mining websites, they MIGHT have got it right!! :curse:

Thanks Jim

I know what a man engine is and what it looks like from the photo's I have been able to find, I was saying it would be nice to see a 3D model of one though which is interactive so you can move around it zoom in/zoom out and so on.
