Anyone using one?

Looks to be a useful little camera, 24mm equivalent, RAW capability and full manual.

Downside may be a lens that goes in and out and has the capability to ingest dirt, but the advantages of its tinyness may be a winner.

I love my little LX3 - as you state it can do RAW and has full manual operation. The zoom is limited and definetly impacts on the sharpness on max.

But for low light stuff its great as although on the face of it the pixel count doesn't sound impressive its because the sensor elements are larger than normal which makes it supersensitive to light. I've found a typical a shot has required 6 or less seconds exposure to capture a scene using decent lighting.

Roly.

Cheers Roly!

I'm currently leaning towards the LX3 - although I do like the idea of the Canon D10 being fully mine-proofed (well, water-proofed).

the d10 will be able to do raw and full manual soon
http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/D10
Its in beta at the moment

The default mode is a bit on with long shutter (15s) being a "scene" more

Theres definitly some merit in that - many times I wished I could keep it unprotected to grab quick shots rather than waste time removing it from a waterproof bag.

Do you have a D10 MP? Sorry if you've already answered that - I honestly can't remember! 😞

Woudl be really interested to have a go with it, thanks!

I was thinking... Pany Lumix GF1 for slate mines (I shall get round to writing a brief report on this soon) and the D10 for foul and disgusting places aka metal mines

I use an LX3, as does Colonel Mustard. Been very impressed with it so far. It did have to go back to Panasonic for a new lens mechanism (warranty) after I kept getting a 'lens fault' - but it may have had something to do with an 80ft free fall when my kit bag's hanging strap broke! An internet search shows the 'lens fault' is not uncommon though.

I'd still highly recommend it. Hardly used the Nikon SLR since I got the LX3.

I've recently 'jailbroken' my Ixus 75, but I find the new menus strangely complicated!

Yep they take some getting used to.
I used to have it on my old camera its not to bad after reading the fine manual. The scripts can be handy too
:)
more than happy to let you and simon have a play with it some time

Bit the bullet and bought an LX3

First impressions are that its a great camera and if anything, a bit too nice to take underground!

The macro close-ups are absolutely astonishing - I'll post something up later.

I would fully agree with both of the above, though you do soon overcome the newness & over cautious bit underground after a couple of trips.

I've had mine just a year now, it's done plenty of very wet underground trips, I have been careful not to get it too muddy, I always carry a cloth in my oversuit for cleaning my hands before operating the camera & this seems to work .

It has got quite wet by drips etc on several occasions but a again a quick wipe off & it's been fine.

I've just started to take more close up shots using the macro focusing & like you say they can be excellent. I've actually started to use it more outside now for buildings & views/wildlife etc & it's quite capable & just so easy to carry about, it really is an excellent all rounder.
The management thanks you for your co operation.

Er, how do you focus it underground?!

Ah, I prefer to use AF, not too keen on the manual toggle thing. I find AF works very well 99 percent of shots if you light up the point of focus well to start with , until you see the green square in the LCD then I normally shoot using the 2 second timer to stop trigger vibration, then start to light paint.

Hope that makes sense. I find if I do not give the subject area enough light just to start with the focus can be a bit off.

As brakeman says, throwing enough light on the subject will usually do the trick.

Digital cameras focus a lot more easily on well defined lines or edges. You can usually experiment with this by trying to focus firstly on a smooth uniform surface, then moving the focus point to a sharp, high contrast edge.

If you want to know some of the technicalities: http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/camera-autofocus.htm

Summary; if the camera is struggling to focus, make sure the focus point is well lit and contains a well defined edge.
