For my photography I have always used a small compact camera, compact telescopic tripod and now high power LED lighting – this all makes a really small and effective photographic set up, leaving lots of space for expedition gear - but I have hit a snag.
My first camera was the Minolta Di-Image Xt, with Carl Zeiss optics. The camera was 3.1mp, and had the bonus of going into long exposure (upto 5s) when you turned the flash off. Despite the camera being from late 2003, it produced fantastic sharp images until last summer when I changed it.
After spending much time looking at camera specs and user manuals, I chose the Samsung i8, 8mp, lens that did not come out, and up to 16s shutter exposure. Spec wise its functionality seemed perfect. I’ve been using it from late summer and have been disappointed. The biggest problem is the focusing, almost all my shots now are taken unfocused as it just cannot focus underground, whilst the Minolata just needed the tiniest bit of light / spot and it would focus. Also the images from the Samsung when looked at 1:1 scale are very mushy, did not get this with the Minolta. To boot, the software is sloppy in terms of processing speed.
So I am after a new compact to match (yes you guessed it) the Minolata, but updated with 8mp, long controllable shutter etc…. After searching and reading about the Panasonic Lumix cameras, these look like they can do what I need providing they don’t have focus issues underground. I’ve looked at reviews and functions and it all seems very good.
Has anyone got any experience using them underground? I was thinking about the LZ10, with up to 60s shutter.
