Managed to get one for £125. Good price?

Is there a tweek to increase the exposure time above 8 seconds or do I use bulb & count?
Any suggestions gratfully recieved.

£125 is a very good price assuming the camera is operationally fine. It is possible to set the bulb to 30 seconds, though 8 seconds should be more than sufficient for most shots.

Hi Mark

There are two shutter options:

1) 8 seconds max with bulb mode (i.e. you have to keep the button pressed down to keep the shutter open)

2) Timed release, max 10 minutes

Sounds like you're on 1)

To change...

In manual mode (M) press 'Menu' on the back, scroll down to 'Show all menus' and press the select button (the one in the middle of the up/down/left/right button). Scroll to 'Exposure options' press the select button, scroll to 'Bulb/Time', press the select button scroll to 'Timed release' press the select button and select from 30s, 1m, 3m, 5, 10m and press select according to preference.

I keep mine on 10 minutes, which gives you etc, etc, 2s, 4s, 8s then 10m on the shutter options controlled by the thumbwheel.

As the Colonel says, 8s is fine for most shots, and this method means you've got the 8s timed release as well as flexibility for much longer shots where you've got the shutter open for as long as you feel is right.

Thanks for all the info folks.
I'll go and have a play in my local tunnel!
Camera came complete in box with a case & 512mb card, so I'm quite pleased with that. Shame the instruction book's in french though. I'll have to download the english version.

Guess what! I've now got a "lens error" message & the camera has locked up.
Tried removing the battery. No luck.

Maybe not such a bargain afterall?

Anyone else had this problem? 😢

It generally happens when you restrain the lens when you switch the camera on and it detects resistance and then freezes in order to prevent damage.

It sometimes happens with me if I get leave the lens cap on, then switch the camera on and find that the string that restrains the cap has got trapped somewhere and the lens can't extend.

Usually, switching off then back on again whilst ensuring that the lens is free to move.

One of my 8400s started to do the 'lens error' after I knocked it over and the lens hit the floor. My error message was accompanied by a horrible grating noise as the lens attempted to extend.

Has your camera done this since you got it, or has it for some reason just started to throw the error ?

Only had the camera a few days. I was just finding my way around and taking a few photo's. The problems started when I was transfering the photos to my pc. The camera appeared to lock up & I couldn't see the folder on the camera from the pc. Then I found the lens was stuck out. I switched off & on, then got the error message. This has happened twice now. The first time I cured it by rmoving the battery. (had to do it a few times though) But this time removing the battery doesn't work. Lens is in but have the error message!
Paid via paypal & the seller says he will refund me, but that leaves me without the camera.

This occured while uploading to computer? Interesting.
Is the battery fully charged and are its terminals clean?

Is it possible to connect this camera to the 'net and update its software? Sounds like this might be the problem maybe?

Hmmm Sounds mechanical ? If so, it could probably be repaired .

I have fully charged the battery & updated to the latest firmware.

I think I will try & get a refund, but tell the seller I am still interested if he gets the camera repaired.

Thanks for the advice chaps.

There's one very cheap on ebay at present, parents said I could have it as christmas present if I got it whilst it's still a low price (90 pounds at present); would you say it's worth having an attempt at getting it?? 😉

Definitely, if you can get it for sensible money, get it. I've only used my P6000 underground twice, and have gone back to the 8400. For sure 8 mega pixel isn't massive these days, but the features and ruggedness make up for it 🙂

Well, to be honest if I were you, I would seriously consider some SRT gear instead of another camera.... 🙂

I think that marty is bidding on this, it was mentioned over on Mine-Explorer a couple of days ago (the thread is still visible) & brakeman pulled out to prevent a bidding war 😮

Ah, so that's who the other bidders were.
I think I'll pull out as well, after all I don't need it desperatly.

As for the SRT thing, I will get there eventually, I think it was the colonel who pointed out that it's a good idea to get a feel for different harnesses before you actually buy one; I think it was that...

Ah, they crop up from time to time though LAP, and after Christmas I dare say there will be a few more appearing on eBay as people offload old cameras after getting new ones over the festering period 😉 Always worth keeping an eye out on eBay for them.

Marty - did you win it?
