Canvas personally as it feels like it should have a greater durability but bought mine on basis of whichever were the cheapest and will probably do so again.

And bags, conveyor belts and bits of carpet 😉 I think they all have their place!

From a theoretical point of view :smartass: , I would guess that the best rope protector would be one that presents the least friction to the rope. The protector does not just protect the rope from being cut into at a single point by a sharp edge, but prevents the rope rubbing on the edge as the section above the edge stretches and relaxes, particularly when someone is climbing the rope. So, from this aspect, a PVC protector might be best.

However, in practice, I'm not sure if the material used makes much difference.

(Obviously, if a deviation or rebelay can be arranged, that's a much better solution.)

I wonder has any research been done into it? Along similar lines to DMM's falls on dyneema slings video?

Would agree with Dave by and large but would add that only (usually) tend to use them at the head of pitches etc so the amount of movement/stretch on the rope should be fairly minor.

Canvas definitely, the thicker the better. The Lyon ones are expensive but best long term value.

£12 for the 0.5m and £17.50 for the 1m ones according to my catalogue.

I never knew they did them, although they are tucked away a bit.

The caving supplies canvas ones work very well although on Slate most types wont last long.

You're not wrong. Those red canvas ones on the CRTT - if you remember them - were mine. They looked like tea bags towards the end.

As an update to the good old hosepipe I have used overhead cable protector sheath.
Its plastic, durable as hell (you could safely belay to a razor wired post with it) can be cut into covenient lengths, and has a pretty industrial yellow colour so you dont leave it in the grass when you're packing the gear away. 🙂
Good for pitch heads/belays, crap for anything down-hole, rebelays and the like.
Most times a friendly chat and the offer of a drink can persuade an electricity board contractor to leave a 10 foot lenght 😉
