What a lot of bankers. Cavers are famous for spending a long time underground. Geoff Workman 100 odd days in in Stup Cross Cavern and some Yugo spent a year in a cave

That maybe the case Tony, but that was by choice, that is not so in this case.

Snippet from the beeb about supplies to the trapped miners - surprising what you can get down a 12cm borehole!

I think they might legitimately want to know what brand of toothpaste they were receiving.

I'm amazed that sending down football shirts is a good use of time & money.

I think it is more to do with the psychological well being of the miners at this point, it's nice to see that people of different nations have a care for these guys.

Quite agree Brakeman. Nice to see they've not been forgotten about and it's not simply a domestic Chilean issue now.

As it showed dirty washing being sent up, presumably clean washing needed to be sent down too!!

Latest is they might be rescued as early as this weekend:

Engineers drilling to reach 33 trapped miners in Chile say the men might be rescued as early as this weekend.

The head of one of the drilling operations, Pedro Buttazzoni, told the BBC his drill had only 160m (524ft) further to go to reach the men.

Earlier, Chilean President Sebastian Pinera said rescuers were "very close" to getting them out.

If they are sending down clean clothes for hygeine reasons then I suppose there is no reason why they can't have football shirts

Rescuers have drilled through to the underground chamber where 33 Chilean miners have been trapped since August.

The breakthrough at the San Jose mine came shortly after 0800 local time (1200 GMT), sparking celebrations.

It means efforts to remove the miners through the tunnel should begin within days.

Thats good news, just depends now on the condition of this borehole, whether stable enough without lining to bring these men out.

Interesting, there was someone, presumably from Chile on the radio earlier saying that the operation was costing a bomb, but it didn't matter if they got the miners out in good nick. Taking Chris's point on board, do they have some sort of algorithm where the miners' well-being is a function of the number of loads that can be delivered per unit time ? I notice they got PSPs not Nintendo DSs. A good move in my opinion.

Watching the live feed right now, the pod has finally reached the miners and the mine tech expert has greeted the men. It's a great thing to see, one of those moments that bring a smile to your face for sure.

It's absolutely fabulous news and the rescue is going so well.

Sat here scanning the TV and Internet reports it's hard to comprehend all the technical know how that has been used to achieve this great outcome.

What's even more incredible is the fact that those that are being rescued have been instrumental in moving three quarters of the 500 tons of rock that fell down the trial bore hole.

Lets hope the rescue is completed without incident.

Just noticed they're using good old fashioned zip ties to make sure the cage door is secure. Brilliant.
