Rescuers blasted and dug through mud and debris today to try to reach 27 miners trapped hundreds of feet below ground after a landslide buried the iron ore plant in which they worked in southwestern China. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/asia/article6450221.ece 

It doesn't mention it in the online article but official figures show that more than 3,200 workers died in China's notoriously dangerous coalmines last year but independant observers say that the actual figure could be much higher because many accidents are covered up.
The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.
