Nenthead Mines Conservation Society are now the owners of the freehold of most of the mines site. This took effect from 23rd October 2020. Rampgill, Caplecleugh, Carrs, Firestone, Smallcleugh and Middlecleugh Level entrances are on the NMCS landholding. We also own a small piece of land including Brownley Hill Low Level entrance.

We look forward to seeing old and new friends. We need you all to join us in caring for and developing the site. Come and join us in 2021.

Pete Jackson, for NMCS.

Is that on the same sort of idea as Cwmystwyth, i.e. the landowner (Cumbria County Council) need to be rid of the liability and sold it for a song to a reputable local charity?

NMCS were given the site by the CCC. We paid our small legal expenses. Ownership is the gateway to grant applications. etc

Hi Pete, are there any changes in access in the pipeline or will things carry on as it has been?

You haven't mentioned it but out of interest does the ownership also cover the smaller levels like Roaring Spring Water, Shawside, Hodgsons and the like that are dotted in the valley head and Dowgang Hush?

Hi Peter & friends!
well done in securing this change of ownership!
no doubt thev local authority also were pleased, since they are no longer responsible for such an important site.

best wishes and hope to see you next year!

Mike - we are not currently planning any access changes. I will upload a provisional site boundary map. Hodgsons High and Low are in the landholding, Roaring Spring is not. Dowgang Hush is in ( up to the trackway to Dowgang coal mine).

Chris - Cumbria does not have the resources to care for the site. We have a chance of being able to obtain conservation grants. We can generate sufficient income from Open Days to cover our base costs, with a Volunteer operation

I'm not criticising. It is interesting that both Cambrian Mines Trust and now Nenthead Mines Conservation Society secured important mining sites for minimum outlay. I am thinking of it in terms of beginning to set a precedent for other efforts.

The key benefit of the transfer of the Nenthead Site from the County Council to the Nenthead Mines Conservation Society is that now the site is controlled by Trustees who understand it, appreciate it and cherish it. NMCS is a Registered Charity who are now in a much stronger position to raise more funds and even more volunteers to preserve and enhance the site for the benefit of the local community and mining history folk everywhere.

Well done Pete & All,

I'll bear this strongly in mind when renewing my membership and chuck in a bit extra to help with costs.
