Welcome to the site MartinM

Was really interested to see this photo you've entered into the photo competition.

What caught my eye there was the apparent angle of the vein. It looks nearly horizontal. We've one like that in North Wales (Moel Ferna) but I understand it to be rare.

Is there much slate mining in the Czech Republic? It's not an area I know much about and there are only 5 mines in the database from CZ.

It does :)

It's a very atmospheric photo and I hope the phographer stops around for a while to tell us a bit more about slate mining in the Czech Republic and upload a few more photos :flowers:

Great photos
From what i've read, the Czech Republic has it's fair share of mines. I've been in touch with a chap called Robert from Kahan Speleo http://www.kahan-speleo.cz/  with a view to him joining AN & adding a few sites & maybe organising a trip out there. I'm still awaiting more infomation but so far he has said that they have problems entering mines legally and the owners go to lengths to limit access!
A few of their trips have been posted on 28DL in the international section~ Golden Mountains Gold Mine http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=51180
I for one would be willing to join a trip over there if something could be organised.

I would too :)

That would be awesome.

Would also be great to see more European mine explorers and exploring content on here :flowers: It's all interesting stuff. I visited one mine in France (tourist mine - disused mines in France are a whole different kettle of fish) but that's about it for me for overseas so far.

There is a lot of stuff in Poland as well, and a fair few explorers - some of which have uploaded on here.

I'm always thinking about trips to Poland as well.

I suppose this also is the same for Czech, in Poland many of the younger generation can speak English, but in Poland if we ever sorted a trip out, there would be the bonus of me being able to speak the local lingo as well - just in case.

Cholera jasna, Dziekuje, my speech is far better than reading and writing skills.

So, are you of Polish origin, or just happen to have learnt it or maybe a translation engine?

Thanks for these Martin, these make interesting reading and don't seem to have been too badly mangled by google! I did smile at "the wicked winds of mine ventilation", I presume the original Czech was referring to what we'd call bad air, I also assume that auto-translating some of our papers on the Welsh or lakeland slate industry would produce some similarly strange phrases in Czech!

I'm from Poland but Czech Republic is definately great mine exploration spot. Many polish explorers are traveling to Czech visiting their mines. In general you can find there relatively modern abandoned mines - from XX century which is not so easy in Poland...

To give you some flavor of what we are doing there feel free to check our last movie clip from Czech mine:

Excellent video, thanks for the link

What sort of mine is this? The water looks very yellow in the video.

That's medieval gold mine. This yellow colour (water or mud) is characteristic for this entire area. Doesn't matter if mine is modern or antient you will always find this colour.
It's bloody challenging however to wash it out of your clothes and stuff after trip :)

Some example of moder mine in that area covered with yellow mud:

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
