At a risk of stating the obvious you could start by looking at the data base of mines which you will find in the menu on the left of the home page.

Eeek, that's a lot of mines. There's about 7,000 on here (not all metal mines) and that's not definitive by any means.

What sort of project are you involved in?

That was my initial thought Simon but if simlewis already has all the S/W mines we are already minus quite a number of trees. 😉

That's a massive amount of data you're gathering there, and you have to start asking what you define as constituting a mine for the purposes of your research. Quite often, you'll find one later mine consolidates several earlier mines under a single title, and then there is the question of old mines that we can no longer place accurate - to take Derbyshire as an example, the nature of the mining law meant that there were a vast number (we're talking tens of thousands) of small mines which had brief lives, changed names over time or the names have been lost. Have you considered limiting your scope to more recent times when there are mineral returns and mining inspectorate records available?

Actually these returns go back quite a way. I have a copy for 1884 and to say they are detailed is an understatement. The problem I'm finding is getting access to the later ones. But as you correctly point out he has his work cut out if tries to to include all mines.

Hi thanks for your reply,

iam working on a project for a property search company.

I have completed the coal mining section as the coal.gov.uk has a full list of towns that are affected buy coal mining and i simply had to match up the postcodes 5687 of them! Next projects are metals,Limestone,Gypsum,

If there is anywhere a list of towns that are in mining areas thats all i need ( not that detailed ) any help would be greatly appreciated

you are after the extent of underground workings and the nearby towns/villages. This sort of specific information does not usually come free of charge plus you need to know where to look for it.

plus if any of our info is inacurate will the legal people be heading our way,of course this site can give you pointers but there are organisations out there with this information already set upfor the property market for a small fee thats why house insurance goes up at the mere wiff of a mine in the area.
if its a hole explore it...

[mod]Some pruning of the post undertaken[/mod]

simlewis, thank you for your interest in the site. However, the database of mines on AditNow (and other similar web sites) is a resource built up through the effort and goodwill of members of the underground exploration community contributing to the site from their own knowledge and research.

Therefore, data will not be released in part or full to any third party, commercial or otherwise. Individual members may wish to help with information relating to their area, however for a commercial enquiry it would be reasonable to assume that they would be paid for their assistance.
Hello again darkness, my old friend...
