Can anyone tell me what this 'thing' was used for, and how it was used? I'm having trouble trying to understand out how the barytes was worked at Gasswater. Any clues (idiot-guide) to the system they used would be appreciated.

If its what I think it is there is one in Lefel Fawr at Cwmystwyth.

Metal shade for an electric light, centre hole which carried the bulb socket is corroded away leaving a large hole. It would have originally been white.

Fortunately its in Scotland or it might get 're-purposed' for filling sandbags! ;)

Been thinking about where I have seen these.

Occurs, Cwmystwyth, Box (Ministry area), Milwr Tunnel, Greenside, and loads in the slate mines.

If you look at Rab's other pic in Gasswater of the same thing it seems a bit large for a light shade and appears to be in same kind of "concrete" matrix for support?.

May be Rab could give an indication of size?

I think the boot at the bottom of photo gives a rough idea of size. My 2d's worth is it's a section of old ventilation pipe (somewhat squeezed) used as a chute.

Rab... the blue folder with Gasswater notes in still lurks somewhere in the loft. One day, one day ........:)

Given that there seem to be more metal cylinders embedded further on, it rather looks like an ore-chute

Thanks for all the replies. Maybe I should have described the thing a bit better. It's metal, oval-ish, and the top sticks up through the pavement of workings. The thing leads down, in sections, through the backfill, to somewhere! Ventilation, or some kind of chute have been suggested. It does look like something for an air-course, or a chute for shovelling stuff down, and if they were working upwards from a level down below, I can understand the need for the sections. But if underneath where they were working was backfill, why would they need an air-course underneath them? Or if it was a chute for filling stuff down, where would it go to? Am I just showing my ignorance?
