Whilst looking for more on the talcum mine I came across this about an attempt at a gold mine somewhere around Glenelg but not been able to identify the location - why can't people include a NGR!

This the place?

NGR: NM895243

Edit: only a guess as Carr Brae is mentioned in the text, also suspect the NGR should start with NG!

The NGR is at the bottom of the track up to Carr Brae - I know it because I have walked up to the radio station a few times with my work.

I can't see Creapall on the map though, I will have another look at the 1st and 2nd Edition OS in the morning to see if shows on either of them.

Completely unhelpful and off topic but Glenelg is possibly the only palindromic place name in the UK. :smartass:

I believe this trial is indeed an NG 985243 map ref. G V Wilson in his book 'Memoirs of the Geological Survey Vol. XVII Lead,Zinc,Copper and Nickel ores of Scotland 1921. page 146
gives the name as Loch Duich Trials with an assay result as follows: iron 55%, Sulphur 40%, Copper 0.25%, Nickel 0.8%,
with Silver 11dwt(penny weight) per long ton and Gold at 3.5 dwt per lon ton. Two Welsh miners were employed to drive a short level. Hope this is of help. Just as an aside I lived in Kilmore the village near the map ref given and found no signs of any trial near by. JeremyL

PS. sorry misleading comment, Kilmour is at the original NM map ref!!! JeremyL
