Spam, you've got me troubled. I looked for Hilderston Mine but only found some gangue material in the burn. You sound like there's more to be seen than that so either I missed it or was at the wrong location. Is there a spoil heap or adit?
Regards Wharryburn

The mine is about half a mile southish of Cairnpapple car park. If you follow the road down where there should be a small sign post marking a foot path to Torphichen. On the east side of the road there should be a gate with a small track, follow that. There you will notice a large body of water and it is on the western bank you will find the entrance its about 1m in diameter. I don't yet know how extensive this mine is yet but hope to find out soon. Another thing, the entrance tunnel joins onto another tunnel after about 30 meters but to reach the end does involve swimming a 5 meter strech and the rest is fairly deep. I hope that helps you wharryburn and have fun exploring.

P.S. Feel free to ask me if you have any problems.

there is another entrance at the south east side of the water, don't know if its part of the mines, was told years ago that they were living quarters.

was up there the day to have look and i could not find the mine on the west side of the water . but the 2 on the east have been filled in. but you can get in to one of them for about 4m and the one to the south has been filled in as well. 😞

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
