I thought I'd share this with you all as I was pretty chuffed when I found it.

There's a mine near Dalkeith that still has a lot of remnants of buildings and an open adit. It was part of the Dalkeith Colliery owned by A.G. Moore and was worked in the 1920's. It closed in the 1930's for reasons unknown but it was maintained until the 1950's.

There were at least 4 adits here. I can see three from the abandonment plans that point NW and the remaining one points SW. There's lots of building remnants around and I'd like to map it one day so I can work out what everything was for definite!

The remaining open adit looks pretty dodgy and in a state of collapse although it does look like you could get past the obstruction which I think was an attempt at demolition.

Obviously Gas Monitors are in order here so I've not ventured down it at all.

Anyway - some pics (they're for registered users just now as the mines and pits of Midlothian are quite gassy - I'd hate some inexperienced person to venture down this) ....

A couple of maps to start with:

I'm not sure what this was:

Nice find, ive known of this mine for years now and have also explored with my kids down there but never saw the adit must check it out some time.
Have you checked out the old mine at Temple near Gorebridge?
If you follow the hill from the old mine over to the river you will find the old entrance to the mine and further down the hill there are 2 open Bell pits (very dodgy) i lowered my video camera down one of them but ran out of rope at 30m.

Does anyone know if this has been filled in? I spent hours scouring the woods for it without any luck.

Several adits marked on the site, though only two have treatment records.

1. Adit bearing 171, so maybe the SW one referred to by the OP:

"Adit excavated to provide 2m of rock cover. Bund formed using excavated material and pushed a further 3m into adit. Concrete plug formed using 35m3 in total. Adit mouth backfilled with type 1 and ditch reformed."

2. Adit bearing 284, so the NW heading one possibly?

"This entrance to the mine was collapsed and secured in December 1995 by IMC Ltd acting on behalf of the Coal Authority."

Hi - I think the adit I found was pointing around 190-200. I can remember exactly where it was so I'll have a look sometime. It was pretty obvious though so I'm assuming it's been filled.

Here's roughly where it was with the direction....

The Coal Authority may have been scanning Aditnow, noticed this old post & moved to DEFCON 1 but then again.... they might not.

Sometimes landowners or those with agency over the land just fill in holes because they feel they ought to.

It could be the same one that i know of....the Adit has iron bars over the front and there are 2 ladder shafts (or there was). :curse:
